Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl look great for the most part, but it’s a shame Cheryl’s terrible Chansey is coming back.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Shouldnt Have Brought Back Cheryls Awful Chansey

We’re officially less than a month out from the highly anticipated launch of Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl. Those of you who played Gen 4 back in the day will likely know of Sinnoh’s respectable standing in comparison to other mainline regions, although as someone who knows more about Pokemon than literally anything else in the world, I feel obliged to remind you that it’s not all Sunny Days and Rain Dances.

I am, of course, talking about Cheryl’s awful, terrible, deplorable Chansey, who is unfortunately confirmed to be returning in ILCA’s upcoming remakes. Typing that sentence legitimately made me want to burst into tears – Cheryl’s Chansey is a proper chancer.

For what it’s worth, I have no problem whatsoever with Chansey as a Pokemon. I don’t love it, but it’s fine. My issue is specifically with the Chansey Cheryl brings into Eterna Forest with her, which knows Egg Bomb, Softboiled, and Refresh – for some baffling reason it has chosen to uselessly and exclusively spam Refresh in every Gen 4 Nuzlocke I have ever done. Depending on the rules you adhere to, it’s pretty cool that Cheryl is able to heal you after each battle, but also… look, just please use Chansey properly this time around, yeah? You can’t heal me if we’re all already dead.

When you’re playing Pokemon normally, Cheryl’s Chansey isn’t necessarily a massive problem, although it’s still just… boring. It’s worth noting that Cheryl also appears in the Battle Tower in HeartGold & SoulSilver, during which we get a look at some of her other ‘mons, which include but are not limited to: Alakazam, Milotic, Umbreon, Espeon, Roserade, and bloody Cresselia. That’s not to mention her Chansey eventually evolves into the far superior Blissey – even though Eviolite exists, the Happiness Pokemon will always win out against the Egg Pokemon. Yes, Chansey is literally called that in the PokeDex.

All of this is especially prominent when you consider other Gen 4 NPC trainers with scripted story sequences, particularly Riley. While Cheryl insists on battling with a useless Chansey, Riley assists you with a level 34 (or 41 in Platinum) Lucario. He also gives you an Egg on Iron Island, which hatches into Riolu and gives you an opportunity to raise your own Aura Pokemon. Riley, also confirmed for the remakes, is sound and acts as a major asset for all aspiring Diamond & Pearl Nuzlockers. While neither Cheryl nor Chansey are individually bad, together they are the literal manifestation of a Nuzlocker’s nightmare.

I suppose Chansey isn’t the worst thing about the latest Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl trailer. While early looks at the games showcased the return of the beloved Underground gimmick – complete with all new lairs containing ‘mons from previous generations, which are of particular interest when you remember that BDSP is right to ignore ones after Gen 4 – the most recent footage highlighted Amity Square. Why do I hate Amity Square, you ask? Because Amity Square is for Tories. Loads of people got annoyed at me when I published an article about that a couple of weeks ago – probably all Tories, innit.

Anyway! Here’s hoping Cheryl’s Chansey is at least slightly better this time around. I mean, all you’d need to do is give it a fourth move or take away Refresh. I know Refresh technically has narrative significance in that it’s necessary for explaining why Chansey heals your ‘mons between battles even if they have status conditions, but you could also just give Cheryl loads of Antidotes or something. Once Chansey is useful, I will be satisfied – until then, however, I am unfortunately cursed to moan into the void about everything that annoys me about Pokemon. On some occasions, I’m willing to apologise for that, especially when I know that I really am just complaining too much. Cheryl’s Chansey though? I’m not even sorry. Just make it better. Please. Cheers.
