Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl recreate the Sinnoh region in a chibi art style that’s equivalent to the pixel art of its Nintendo DS originals. It gives the Sinnoh region a new coat of paint that brings the generation’s fan-favorite Pokémon in a more accessible way.

Features like the Grand Underground and modern quality-of-life improvements allow for more varied team composition, which in turn help the classics from 2006 become even more viable. The Legendary Pokémon of the games rank at the top, but there are plenty of the more “standard” creatures that greatly help players throughout the story.

10 Infernape

Infernape was one of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl’s most used species, and its battle prowess in the remakes hasn’t changed that status much. Choosing Chimchar is a significant boon for the player in the early goings, as they can evolve it into the Fire/Fighting Monferno to get through the first gym, and its Fire typing especially tears through the second.

Infernape works well as a mixed attacker since its Attack and Special Attack stats are so strong. This makes moves like Flamethrower, Flare Blitz, and Close Combat all nightmares for the main questline opponents.

9 Staraptor

One of the best regional bird Pokémon in the franchise is Staraptor. Aside from having a great character design, it’s one of the birds that packs the most punch. It’s a great lead-in Pokémon with its Intimidate ability to lower opposition Attack stats and has a high Physical Attack itself.

Staraptor has an impressive movepool too, as it can learn high-risk/high-reward moves like Brave Bird and even the aforementioned Close Combat. Even with HMs not being a requirement for party members anymore, Staraptor still earns its keep on sheer power.

8 Roserade

Roserade is another fan-favorite Pokémon and is an evolution of the Hoenn region native Roselia. The dual Grass/Poison-type serves as a great complement to Infernape in particular, as it compensates for all its Type disadvantages. Roserade has a high Special Attack stat, and its movepool is great for whittling down opponents with hazardous attacks.

Its Speed is also useful in getting the early upper hand, with moves like Toxic and Leech Seed being great for those aforementioned hazards while dealing out attacks like Petal Dance and Venoshock to beat down opponents.

7 Lucario

One of the admitted downsides to Lucario is how late in the game players can get one. Though, for those willing to wait and put in the work, Lucario is another excellent mixed attacker with a fantastic dual-typing. Its first form, Riolu, is obtained as an Egg in the Iron Island cave.

Riley, a fan-favorite and classic Pokémon character, returns from the original Diamond and Pearl to give the player the egg at the end of his side quest. Lucario has one of the best typings possible, with Fighting/Steel-type making it an offensive powerhouse capable of using heavy Special and Physical attacks. Moves like Aura Sphere, Meteor Mash, and Close Combat give Lucario a scary amount of weapons.

6 Garchomp

Pseudo-Legendary Pokémon, as the name suggests, are the strongest species players can use without using Legendary creatures. Garchomp is the Pseudo of the Sinnoh region and is among the most popular of its category across the franchise’s eight generations. Even though the Fairy Type has been retroactively added to Sinnoh, the Dragon/Ground-type still lives up to its reputation.

Garchomp is also obtainable later in the main game, but its power makes up for it. It’s fast, defensively sturdy, and a heavy Physical hitter. Having access to moves like Earthquake, Outrage, Dragon Claw, and even coverage attacks like Stone Edge and Poison Jab make it a terrifyingly flexible battler. Cynthia uses a Garchomp as her ace, which also makes for one of the most memorable boss fights in Pokémon.

5 Azumarill

The Johto-native evolution of Marill is a Pokémon that’s gotten stronger in the Sinnoh region with Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl’s quality-of-life changes. Azumarill was already a strong and bulky Pokémon, but the addition of the Fairy Type to its primary Water typing is a major plus.

It has fairly average base stats, but if players find one with the Huge Power ability, then its Physical Attack stat doubles. This makes attacks like Play Rough, Waterfall, and coverage attacks like Double-Edge and Superpower especially powerful. Azumarill with Play Rough and the Huge Power ability make it particularly useful for wiping out Cynthia’s Garchomp.

4 Magnezone

The Sinnoh region introduced many new Pokémon that were evolutions of classics, and Magnezone is the final form of the Kanto-native Magneton. Gold and Silver brought in the Steel Type, and two more generations later and Magnezone can take advantage of more Steel-type attacks.

Of the 18 Types in the Pokémon games, Magnezone is only weak to three: Fighting, Fire, and Ground. The natural sturdiness of the Steel typing lets it tank hits, and Magnezone’s high-end Special Attack makes moves like Flash Cannon and Thunderbolt ideal for an offense.

3 Rampardos

Sinnoh’s Fossil Pokémon are still obtainable fairly early-game in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Once players get access to the Explorer’s Kit in Eterna City, they can visit the Grand Underground. While it’s a rare find, players can dig up the Dome Fossil and revive it into Cranidos back in Oreburgh City.

Its evolution Rampardos is a bit of a glass cannon given its low defenses, but it has a daunting Physical Attack stat that keeps it viable for sweeping opponents before they get a chance to fight back. Coverage attacks like Zen Headbutt can be useful in certain matchups and, if players are willing to take the risk, the Rock-type Head Smash can be devastating to opposition.

2 Bastiodon

The counterpart Fossil to Rampardos is Bastiodon. The former is exclusive to Brilliant Diamond, while the latter is to Shining Pearl. Bastiodon’s first form, Shieldon, is revived from the Shield Fossil found in the Grand Underground and is primarily known for its powerful defenses.

Its typing bolsters these defense stats, being a dual Rock/Steel type. Similarly, its Sturdy ability helps to resist any one-shot knockouts. Bastiodon is a good option for players looking to stall opponents’ damage output and gradually chip away at their HP, even if it’s one of the more underrated picks.

1 Spiritomb

Back in the original games, Spiritomb was even more of a scary threat to face. This was partly due to Cynthia using one as the Sinnoh Champion, but also because it didn’t have any weaknesses at the time. The Ghost/Dark dual-typing covered every basis until generation six introduced the Fairy Type.

Even still, Spiritomb remains a worthy force for what’s competing in the Sinnoh region. Its solid offensive stats make attacks like Shadow Ball and Dark Pulse tough for players to swallow, especially since its only weakness is Fairy and has even more impressive defensive stats. For players, though, it’s a fairly tricky and tedious Pokémon to find.
