The Pokémon series continues to grow in exciting ways and it’s incredible how it’s retained its core values despite the many changes that have taken place since its inception. The Pokémon anime has become an important pillar of the property and both the television series and feature films turn out regular Pokémon content that exposes audiences to new creatures just as effectively as the video games on which they’re based.

Ash remains the Pokémon anime’s faithful leader, and each of the Pokémon that he captures has real weight to them. Fire-Type Pokémon are one of the more popular varieties of the creatures, and Ash has obtained some strong fiery contenders over the years.

7 Charmander’s Growth Becomes A Cautionary Tale

Charmander is the fourth Pokémon that Ash catches in the anime and his first Fire-Type Pokémon. Ash’s relationship with Charmander is one of the more complex bonds between a trainer and their Pokémon in the series. This is present even in Charmander’s first appearance, where it’s shown to be continually abused by its trainer until Ash takes it under his wing and turns Charmander’s life around. Charmander is a significant Pokémon for Ash because before it evolves into Charmeleon, it was unclear if any of Ash’s starter Pokémon would get to evolve. Charmander’s evolution into Charmeleon and later Charizard becomes one of Ash’s most valuable team members and proves how important it is for a Pokémon to be ready to evolve. It leads to a history of disobedience with Ash.

6 Cyndaquil Becomes A Reliable Fire-Type Through Several Regions

Cyndaquil is Ash’s 17th overall Pokémon and his third catch within the Johto region. Ash is determined to catch a Cyndaquil for his party and he finds a forest that’s full of them. Intervention by Team Rocket causes Ash to abruptly catch Cyndaquil in his Poké Ball in order to protect it from Team Rocket’s incoming attack. Despite zero training with the Pokémon, Ash wins his first battle with Cyndaquil that he’s quickly rushed into afterward. Cyndaquil is by Ash’s side in the original anime but is eventually left behind with Professor Oak. In a rare surprise, Cyndaquil doesn’t just rejoin Ash’s party in subsequent anime, but it also evolves into Quilava and shows off its new Eruption technique in Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl.

5 Torkoal Is A Pro In Tough Love

Torkoal is a Fire-Type Pokémon that’s Ash’s fourth Hoenn catch and his 25th Pokémon overall. Torkoal can be easy to underestimate, but it turns into a consistent source of power from Ash that he’s able to slowly perfect over the years. Ash first finds Torkoal when the Pokémon is being attacked by a bunch of Steel-Type Pokémon. Ash comes to the rescue, and he catches Torkoal afterward to seal the deal.

Torkoal has some difficulty bonding with Ash’s other Pokémon and it becomes prey to Team Rocket on several occasions, but it builds a backbone over time. Torkoal gets the most play in the Ruby & Sapphire anime, but also helps out Ash in the Diamond and Pearl series, too.

4 Ash Realizes Chimchar’s Potential

Chimchar is the 30th Pokémon that Ash acquires and the third Pokémon from the Sinnoh region that he acquires. Ash has obtained Pokémon through many different means, but the way in which Chimchar joins his party is especially unique. Chimchar spends a good portion of time in the Diamond and Pearl anime with another trainer named Paul. Paul becomes so disappointed in the dedicated Pokémon that he abandons it, which is when Ash sees what’s happened and rights this wrong. It’s rather poetic that Chimchar evolves into Monferno during Ash’s battle against Paul and he can rub the Pokémon’s growth in his former owner’s face. Monferno later evolves into Infernape and Ash gets to show the world its strength.

3 Tepig Learns Appreciation For The First Time With Ash

Tepig is a Fire-Type Pokémon that’s Ash’s third catch in the Unova region and his 36th overall Pokémon. Tepig’s situation is perhaps the most tragic out of any of Ash’s Pokémon. Tepig’s previous owner, Shamus, abandons the Pokémon and it suffers so much neglect that Ash actually thinks that it’s an Umbreon when he goes to catch it. Ash nourishes the neglected Pokémon and Tepig reciprocates.

Iris first attempts to catch Tepig, but the Pokémon doesn’t allow it to happen and instead defers to Ash. Tepig has to face its past in a big way when Ash engages in a Double Battle with Shamus, which acts as the catalyst for the Fire-Type Pokémon to evolve into Pignite.

2 Fletchinder & Talonflame Learn Through Trial By Fire

During Ash’s time in the Kalos region he catches a Fletchling, which becomes his 44th Pokémon. Fletchling is a Flying- and Normal-Type Bird Pokémon that Ash uses his Froakie to wear down in order to catch. However, Fletchling’s evolved forms become some of the better Fire-Type Pokémon that are at Ash’s disposal. Curiously, Ash’s Fletchling evolves into Fletchinder when he’s engaged in battle with Moria, a Flying-Type trainer, who presents the Pokémon with its evolved form. Fletchinder’s evolution into Talonflame is even more exciting and it’s when the Pokémon comes up against a Moltres of all things. Talonflame doesn’t beat the Legendary Pokémon, but it still saves its friends from it.

1 Litten Comes A Long Way & Becomes One Of Ash’s Best Fighters

Ash’s most recent Fire-Type Pokémon is not just his third catch when he reaches the Alola region in the Sun and Moon anime series, but it also marks the milestone of Ash’s 50th Pokémon. Litten shows up as a wild Pokémon for a number of episodes while it tries its best to sneak food from trainers before Ash decides to catch the creature and take it under its wing. It’s a sweet experience where Ash helps the Pokémon learn Fire Fang before he defeats it with Pikachu and catches it. Litten evolves into Torracat and is finally able to execute the attack Flame Charge. Finally, Ash’s fiery battle with Kukui is what pushes Torracat’s energy over the line and helps it evolve into its final form, Incineroar.
