Pokémon Every Gen 6 Legendary and Mythical Ranked

After a hefty number of Legendaries and Mythicals were introduced in both generations IV and V, the Kalos games took a turn and only contained three Legendaries: Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde. Generation VI also introduced the same number of Mythical Pokémon, although Hoopa has two separate and very distinct forms.

Each Legendary and Mythical Pokémon introduced in Generation VI is very different from its peers, and each brings something different to the table. Despite the fact that there are a lot fewer of them than in some other generations, the Kalos Legendaries and Mythicals seem to fill a large presence with their distinct personalities and designs. Here are all of them, ranked.

7 Hoopa (Confined)

While many Legendary or Mythical Pokémon have different forms, Generation VI did not have much of this. One of the few drastically-different forms between a Pokémon comes with Hoopa, who has both a small Confined form and a large Unbound form.

The Confined Form is definitely the least interesting and least-attractive designs in Generation VI’s pantheon. Sure, it’s a cool color palette and Hoopa is an interesting Pokémon overall, but this design verges on ugly and is somewhat creepy in a sense (but not in a good way).

6 Volcanion

Volcanion, the last Pokémon in the Kalos ‘dex, has the unique status of being the final type combination needed for Water to have been paired with every other type. The Fire/Water-type has a clever design, being based on steam and geysers, making for probably the most obvious way to pair Fire and Water together.

The coloring on Volcanion is nice, but it’s overall a boring design to a certain extent. The regular part of its body doesn’t seem to speak to steam or geysers at all, like they took a quadripedal creature and put its design motif entirely on its back. It would have been better if its thematic design was more thoroughly integrated throughout. It might resemble machinery that produces steam, but it should be more clear.

5 Hoopa (Unbound)

The much cooler and more interesting form of Hoopa is Hoopa Unbound, which takes its genie motif to an epic level. While Hoopa Confined is a small, mischievous imp, Hoopa Unbound is a large, intimidating creature with a mean look and terrifying claws.

The floating arms are a cool touch, and the hoops around its body as accents keep it on-theme. Nobody would be able to resist the fear this thing would strike into their hearts.

4 Yveltal

As far as Flying-type Legendaries go, Yveltal isn’t near the top of the list. But, in Generation VI, it’s pretty cool. It’s definitely intimidating, but it doesn’t give off the “death” vibes that it’s supposed to, being the bringer of destruction. Sure, it definitely looks “dark” and scary, but it doesn’t have the nightmarish vibe that Pokémon like Darkrai, Giratina, or even Mewtwo have.

However, it’s definitely cool in terms of appearance more generally, with the black veins running down its arms and tail. Some have pointed out that it looks somewhat like a T-bone steak (especially when shiny), which can’t be unseen.

3 Diancie

Diancie has been the subject of some very divided opinions over the years. Some recognize Diancie’s beautiful design and Sailor Moon-like vibes, while others think Diancie was a waste of a Mega Evolution. Ignoring the detractors, Diancie is a great design, and its Mega Evolution further reinforces that.

The Mythical Rock/Fairy-type is said to be a mutated Carbink, which is fascinating and a great idea for a Pokémon. Diancie’s crystal adornments are gorgeous, and the ribbons and pink accents in its Mega truly heighten the great design choices.

2 Zygarde

Zygarde has three separate forms, and even though they are each distinct, they are treated more as one Pokémon that Hoopa’s two forms, especially since Hoopa is seen acting differently depending on its forms, as if they’re different personalities. Plus, they have different typing.

Zygarde’s forms are each cool and interesting on their own. Its 10% Form is a small black dog and very nice-looking. Its 50% Form, which is often its default in media and depictions, is intimidating and cool, somewhat resembling a snake or dragon. Its Complete Form is intimidating, scary, and really great, encapsulating its lore and split red/blue coloring.

1 Xerneas

As one of the best Pokémon designs in general, Xerneas definitely takes the top spot for Gen VI’s Legendary Pokémon. This life-giving deer is similar to many other depictions of the forest and life-bringers in popular media, reminding one of the God of the Forest from Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke or Cernunnos in Celtic Mythology.

Xerneas represents life in the way that Yveltal represents destruction. When it is powered up into its Active Form, its antlers glow in a rainbow of dazzling colors. To see a Xerneas in action would be breathtaking. When shiny, it’s even better, swapping its black body for a stark white, which further adds to its brilliant coloring. From its aesthetic design to its lore, Xerneas is truly a pinnacle of Pokémon design.
