The Alola Region posed a different kind of challenge for Ash Ketchum and his Pokémon partners. The days of Gym Leaders were gone; Captains and Kahunas were the new best trainers. Not every challenge was strictly a Pokémon battle, as the Captains and Kahunas had different kinds of obstacles for Ash to conquer.

Like Unova and Kalos before it, Ash entered this region with a new group of fellow travelers and a completely new team of Pokémon partners–except for Pikachu of course. Some of those new Pokémon did a lot of work for Ash, and others never really measured up. Today we are going to rank those Ash’s Alolan Pokémon allies from worst to best.

6 Rotom

Rotom isn’t technically a Pokémon that Ash caught, and it doesn’t battle for Ash. Rotom was given to Ash by Professor Kukui to inhabit Ash’s Pokédex. Rotom talks to Ash and helps him identify Pokémon and record his adventure with the Pokédex’s camera. It parallels the Rotomdex of the Sun and Moon videogames.

5 Melmetal

Melmetal met Ash as a Meltan when he formed a bond with Ash’s Rowlet. After battling Team Rocket with Ash, Meltan fully joined up with Ash. It soon helped Lana’s Eevee, called Sandy, free Pokémon from Team Rocket and defeat their Mareanie.

It later teamed up with its friend, Rowlet, against the Kantonian Gym’s Zweilous and Druddigon. It also managed to defeat Faba’s Hypno during the Manalo Conference, and it later evolved into Melmetal by fusing with another Meltan. However, Melmetal never won a significant battle for Ash.

4 Naganadel

Naganadel became a part of Ash’s team after forming a friendship with Pikachu. Poipole didn’t battle on Ash’s behalf for a while, and it even returned to its own dimension after the crisis caused by the Legendary Pokémon Necrozma. Poipole later returned as a Naganadel and helped Ash in his battle against Professor Kukui, defeating Lucario for Ash. However, Naganadel was defeated by Tapu Koko. Later, Naganadel returned once again to its home dimension.

3 Rowlet

Rowlet was the first Pokémon that Ash caught in Alola, and it was actually raised as a Pikipek. After Ash and Mallow helped Rowlet fight off Team Rocket, the Toucannon that watched over the Pikipek flock gave Rowlet permission to join up with Ash. Rowlet teamed up with Pikachu in Ash’s first challenge, taking out a Yungoos and a Gumshoos with Pikachu, and Rowlet took down Hala’s Crabrawler during Ash’s first grand trial. It also helped Ash’s Litten clear the Lush Jungle challenge. It also helped Rockruff battle Kahuna Olivia, though Rockruff went berserk and KO’d Rowlet before the grand trial concluded. Rowlet also helped Ash in his first battle against Lusamine, Nihilego, and Lilligant. It beat Hau’s Dartrix, the evolved form of Rowlet, on a rematch after swallowing an Everstone and learning Seed Bomb. Rowlet also befriended Meltan, which led to the Pokémon becoming a part of Ash’s team. The two went on to defeat a Zweilous and Druddigon at the Kantonian Gym run by Ryukei. It was given a cloak like that of Decidueye, Rowlet’s final form. It went on to battle and defeat Hau’s Decidueye at Manalo Stadium. When Ash went on to battle Professor Kukui himself, Rowlet defeated Kukui’s Braviary before being defeated by Kukui’s Venusar.

2 Incineroar

Litten encountered Ash several times before joining up with him. It turns out that Litten was watching over an elderly and sick Stoutland, and Litten finally became part of Ash’s team after Stoutland passed on. It slowly came to trust Ash and his team, and Litten and Rowlet worked together to defeat the Totem Lurantis and its ally Castform during the Lush Jungle challenge. Litten became obsessed with the Masked Royal and his Incineroar, the final form of Litten.

While Litten was unable to defeat the Incineroar in the inevitable battle, it did evolve into Torracat during the showdown. Torracat soon teamed up with the Masked Royal’s Incineroar to battle against a challenging Magmortar and Electivire. It learned the Inferno Overdrive Z-Move thanks to help from Celebi and a younger Professor Kukui (time travel was involved), and it later took down Guzma’s Scizor. After another battle against Professor Kukui (the true identity of the Masked Royal) and his Incineroar, Torrocat evolved into an Incineroar itself. However, it still lost this battle.

1 Lycanroc

Lycanroc, then a Rockruff, was presented to Ash by Professor Kukui as a new partner. Ash caught it, and it defeated a Mudbray during its first battle for Ash. It teamed up with Ash’s Rowlet to battle Olivia’s own Lycanroc and Probopass. Rockruff was then helped by Legendary Pokémon Tapu Lele along with the Lycanroc that belong to Olivia and Gladioon to evolve into the Dusk Form of Lycanroc. Lycanroc soon showed that it had a massive temper, but it overcame it to free several Pokémon from the control of Nihilego summoned by Lusamine. Later, Tapu Bulu helped Lycanroc overcome its bad temper so that it could better follow Ash’s commands, and Lycanroc then fought Tapu Bulu to a standstill. After this, Lycanroc was able to defeat Kahuna Nanu’s Persian. After an initial loss, Lycanroc was able to defeat the Lycanroc that belonged to Gladion, Ash’s rival. It faced a brutal defeat from Professor Kukui’s Incineroar, but it gained redemption when it took down Kiawe’s Charizard.
