Throughout Pokémon’s several seasons, Brock has been a regular character as one of Ash’s closest and most trusted friends. Starting as Pewter City’s Gym Leader, Brock initially agreed to journey with Ash as he hoped to learn more about potentially becoming a fully-fledged Pokémon Breeder.

With him being a mainstay throughout Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh, the latter is where Brock ultimately decided to alter his career course, aspiring to become a Pokémon Doctor. The Pokémon that Brock has owned over the years have reflected his current ambitions at the time, be they strong battlers, baby Pokémon that need nurturing, or caring Pokémon that can assist when taking care of others.

11 Comfey Was A Late Addition To Brock’s Team, But An Important One For His Work As A Doctor

Brock was given Comfey by Melemele Island’s Nurse Joy, during his brief trip to Alola in the Sun & Moon series. Brock had been helping out at the Pokémon Center, and Comfey was the perfect gift and Pokémon to help Brock with his aspirations to become a top Pokémon Doctor.

Brock used Comfey shortly after to calm down a Kangaskhan mother with its Sweet Scent before also helping to treat the baby. Comfey isn’t traditionally known for its battling prowess, so for Brock to get a species that is more focused on healing and helping, made a lot of sense.

10 Marshtomp Could Have Become A Strong Battler If Used More

Brock befriending and catching a Mudkip that was distrustful of strangers and protective of its home, was another considerable step in Brock’s path at the time of becoming a top Pokémon Breeder.

Mudkip became a loyal friend to Brock but was ultimately limited to helping out in certain situations with Water Gun, dealing with Team Rocket, and training with Ash, even when it evolved into Marshtomp. Aside from it showing off its Water and Ground-typing with Water Gun and Mud Shot, it also made use of the defensive move Protect.

9 Ludicolo Was Raised Brilliantly By Brock From A Little Lotad

Brock’s raising and treatment of his Lotad through its evolution forms from Lombre to Ludicolo, was arguably one of his greatest achievements as a budding Pokémon Breeder at the time, even if Lombre’s evolution was down to it stumbling across a Water Stone.

As Lotad and Lombre, it wasn’t used especially often in battle but was often called upon to help with certain situations alongside Brock’s Mudkip. As a Ludicolo, it became something of an assistant to Brock with its almost-humanoid features and characteristics. When Brock left it behind with his family, Ludicolo was seen carrying his parents’ luggage as well as generally helping around the house and with the children.

8 Forretress Was An Explosive Addition To Brock’s Team

Pineco was one of Brock’s captures during the group’s journeys throughout Johto and became a loyal friend to its trainer, if not a bit chaotic and unpredictable with its Self-Destruct move. It even evolved into Forretress in order to save and protect its trainer, and Brock was so keen to keep the close friendship going that he brought it with him to the Hoenn region.

Forretress was used early on in Hoenn as Brock’s only Pokémon, but was rarely called upon to help with battling upon his captures of Mudkip and Lotad. Forretress defeated a Hitmonlee with its powerful Rapid Spin but would often resort to using Explosion to quickly resolve battles.

7 Vulpix Was Brock’s First Real Test As A Budding Pokémon Breeder

Vulpix was Brock’s first major project as a Pokémon Breeder-in-training, when his idol Suzie gave it to him to look after. Brock had become the first person other than Suzie that the usually difficult Vulpix had taken a liking to, and their friendship certainly showed potential.

Brock’s caring personality came out the more that he attended to and looked after Vulpix, with him becoming very attached, even refusing to use a Fire Stone to evolve it at one point. Vulpix showcased some impressive offense with the likes of Quick Attack, Flamethrower, and Fire Spin, before Brock eventually returned it to Suzie, with him feeling like Vulpix was never truly his.

6 Brock Never Really Used Crobat To Its Full Potential

Brock caught Zubat early on in their Kanto journeys, although it wasn’t actually shown. Zubat was limited to dealing with Team Rocket and scouting ahead for the group until it evolved into Golbat while in Johto.

Golbat even evolved further into Crobat in order to thwart a Team Rocket Pokémon heist attempt, with it using a devastating Wing Attack to destroy their retreating rocket. In all three of its evolution stages, it was a loyal friend to Brock and a useful Pokémon to have in the group, with it often utilizing its speed and Supersonic sonar. However, it never truly got to show off the best of Crobat, and didn’t use offensive moves beyond Wing Attack and Sonic Boom.

5 Sudowoodo Wasn’t The Strongest But Was Still Used A Lot By Brock

Brock caught Bonsly while he was at the Pokémon Ninja School in Hoenn. Bonsly quickly became Brock’s latest project in terms of caring for it and learning how to better himself as a carer and Pokémon Breeder. Brock babied Bonsly a lot and even bottle-fed the little Pokémon, but he also tried his hand at Pokémon Contests, looking to make the most of Bonsly’s cute characteristics.

Brock took Bonsly with him to Sinnoh and it quickly evolved into Sudowoodo. Sudowoodo became one of Brock’s most used Pokémon in battle, with it participating in several tag battles, training battles against Ash, and clashes with Team Rocket.

4 Happiny Evolving Into Chansey Cemented Brock’s Transition To Becoming A Pokémon Doctor

When Brock won the Pokémon Dress-Up Contest with his Croagunk defying the odds and expectations to stay in character as a Politoed and win the event, earning Brock a Pokémon Egg as a prize, little did Brock know at the time that this egg would change his life.

Brock showed his experience, knowledge, and expertise in caring for the egg until it hatched into a Happiny. Happiny was the latest Pokémon for Brock to baby and care for, but Happiny quickly showcased its incredible strength, and although it was mostly protected, it was still used on occasion to help out in Team Rocket situations. Towards the end of Diamond & Pearl, Happiny evolved into Chansey, further cementing Brock’s transition from Pokémon Breeder to Pokémon Doctor.

3 Geodude Was One Of Brock’s Original Team

Pokémon Every Pokémon Brock Owned In The Anime Ranked

Geodude was introduced as one of Brock’s original Pokémon alongside Onix back when Ash challenged Brock in the Pewter City Gym at the start of his Kanto journey. Geodude was a loyal Pokémon for Brock, but he would call on its help to resolve situations and deal with Team Rocket more than for actual battles.

Geodude traveled with Brock throughout Kanto and Johto but was then left back in Pewter City when Brock went to Hoenn. It was never really eluded to or shown that Geodude was an exceptional battler, but when it made a return with Brock in Sun & Moon, it took on Sophocles’s Togedemaru and Lillie’s Snowy in a mock battle and showcased its strength with it not taking any damage before the battle was called off.

2 Brock’s Croagunk Was Unpredictable & Bizarre But Was One Of His Best-Ever Pokémon

Pokémon Every Pokémon Brock Owned In The Anime Ranked

Croagunk was arguably one of Brock’s most successful Pokémon in the anime, with it being heavily involved and focused on compared to some of Brock’s previous Pokémon pals. Croagunk was shown as being rather distant and in its own world, but it would often move on its own to thwart Team Rocket while Brock and the others were busy elsewhere.

Croagunk was a strong battler, but it also won Brock a Pokémon Egg from a Dress-Up Contest, went far in the Croagunk Festival Contest, and even developed an intense rivalry with a Toxicroak belonging to Team Galactic member Saturn. Even aside from all this, it made consistent appearances acting in the role of scolding Brock for bothering women.

1 Brock’s Old Reliable Onix Eventually Became A Mega Evolving Steelix

Onix was always Brock’s ace in the Gen I Pokémon games and the same could be said for its anime counterpart. It immediately showcased its strengths and weaknesses during Brock’s Gym Battle with Ash, and caused Ash’s Pikachu plenty of problems. Onix was often called upon to use its size, strength, and power to help the team out against the likes of Team Rocket.

As shown in a Pokémon Chronicles episode, Brock lent Onix to his brother Forrest, who subsequently evolved it into a Steelix. Brock proceeded to use Steelix for the Battle Frontier arc, and later when the Sun & Moon series came around, Steelix was shown utilizing Mega Evolution. Mega Steelix battled Kiawe’s Turtonator in an explosive battle, enduring a Z-Move and emerging victorious over Kiawe.
