Pokémon GO Has Been Downloaded A MindBlowing One Billion Times

Pokémon GO, the mobile game that quickly became a cultural phenomenon back when it was released in 2016, has officially been downloaded one billion times and has reportedly grossed an incredible $2.65 billion across the App Store and Google Play. The game, which encourages players to walk around outside and catch Pokémon via their smartphone, has maintained a consistent following since its release and has established itself as one of the most popular titles of all time. To further put this feat into perspective, if America were the only country on earth, every single American citizen would have to download Pokémon GO at least three times each in order to reach one billion downloads.

Granted, a large portion of the downloads are probably re-downloads from trainers who decided to return to the popular AR title, and the game is not nearly as popular as it was in July of 2016, where, at one time, herds of people would be seen walking around and looking down at their phones, while catching Pokémon. Still, developer Niantic has done an excellent job of keeping players interested in the game with the various updates they’ve included.

Since its 2016 release, the game has added raids, allowing you and a group of friends to take down strong Legendary Pokémon and research tasks, giving solo players a chance to catch Legendaries after completing weekly tasks, as well as the classic Pokémon battles and trades. They’ve also added shiny Pokémon, giving players the chance to add an ultra-rare, alternate color version of their favorite monsters to their collection, seasonal events that give them a chance to catch a specific Pokémon type or variant of Pikachu for a limited time, and monthly Community Days, which provide players with a three-hour window in which a rare Pokémon will spawn very frequently. On top of all of that, they’ve even introduced new generations of Pokémon, allowed players to add each other as friends and send landmark-related gifts to those friends, and set up a buddy Pokémon system that enabled players to earn candy simply while they walk.

Even if the game no longer stands as the cultural stamp it was back in the year of its release, Niantic has done an excellent job of providing trainers with reasons to stay invested in the game, and for those who have stopped playing to come back. If they hadn’t made these improvements, it’s difficult to imagine that the game would have come close to reaching one billion downloads. So, if you haven’t played Pokémon GO since 2016, it might be worth your while to come back and see what you’ve been missing.
