In the years since Pokemon GO launched and became a worldwide phenomenon, a ton has changed in the game. From PvP Battles to Friends to Daily Quests – there is a lot in the title that wasn’t there at the start of things. Once system that has remained fairly static up until this point though is the method for earning free PokeCoins.

Aside from one change a few years ago, the basic method for earning PokeCoins in Pokemon GO has always remained the same. Place a Pokemon in a Gym and if it stays there long enough you can earn up to 50 PokeCoins in one day. That system definitely favors players who live near Gyms and has always seemed very luck-based. Apparently, Niantic is finally ready to shake things up and offer a whole bunch of other ways players can earn PokeCoins.

The new PokeCoin system is going to be tested in Australia first, before it eventually rolls out to trainers worldwide. One downside to the new system is that the rate at which Coins are earned in a Gym is going to be decreased. That said, it sounds like there will be plenty of other easy ways to make up the difference by completing in-game activities most players would be doing on a daily basis anyway…

“Right now, the only way to earn PokéCoins is to defend Gyms. But since Pokémon GO’s release, we’ve added features that have vastly changed the way you play. In addition, with more Trainers playing at home, we’re looking to provide more ways for you to earn PokéCoins while playing in one place. So, in the future, we’ll be rewarding you with PokéCoins for activities besides defending Gyms. We’ll soon be testing this update only with Trainers in Australia, and it’ll be coming to all Trainers after this testing phase.

In order to balance this new method of earning PokéCoins, the number of PokéCoins earned from defending Gyms will be reduced from six per hour to two. The maximum number of PokéCoins you can earn in a day will be increased to 55.”
