Pokemon GO developer Niantic has confirmed that players have successfully completed the global Fairy-Type Catch Challenge, which was added to the game on May 3rd. Pokemon GO players were challenged to collectively catch 500 million Fairy-type Pokemon in order to earn special rewards which would be added to the game later this month.

The challenge caused some confusion among players, as it was not tracked in the Global Challenge Arena. Many fans took to Twitter to contact Niantic regarding the issue, which was the second major problem reported in May after the Marill limited-time research was accidentally launched too early. The developer seemingly did not fix the problem, although it did confirm that challenge progress was being updated eternally. According to updates from Twitter, the player base was halfway through the challenge on May 5th and completed it entirely during the afternoon of May 7th.

The rewards for completing the Catch Challenge, which were shared on Twitter by Pokemon news source Serebii, include the appearance of Fighting-type Pokemon Pancham in Raid Battles, the addition of Shiny Galarian Ponyta to the game, and a 3x Catch Experience bonus. The rewards will be active beginning on May 11th at 10 am local time and will conclude on May 18th. It has not been confirmed whether or not Shiny Galarian Ponyta will remain in the game after this period. Pancham will likely remain in the game, but it is not known whether it will remain in raids.

The quick completion of the Fairy-Type Catch Challenge was aided by the ongoing Luminous Legends X event, which celebrates the game Pokemon X. Pokemon X is part of Pokemon’s sixth generation, which saw the addition of the Fairy type to the game. Two Fairy-type Pokemon, Swirlix and Spritzee, were added to the game, while the Fairy-type Legendary Pokemon Xerneas began appearing in five-star Raid Battles. Other Fairy-type Pokemon, including Ralts, Cottonee, Clefairy, and Jigglypuff, are experiencing increased spawn rates. The Luminous Legends X event concludes on May 17, although the majority of newly added Pokemon will be remaining in the game in some form.

May has been an exciting month for Pokemon GO, as it celebrated the release of the Nintendo Switch title New Pokemon Snap with a series of photography-themed research tasks. Players were challenged to snap photos of Pokemon appearing in the game, including Mantine, Wooper, Lotad, and several others. New Pokemon Snap released for the Nintendo Switch on April 30. It features over 200 Pokemon to photograph in the brand new Lental region.

The next major Pokemon GO event is May Community Day, which will take place on Saturday, May 15. Swablu is the featured Pokemon for this event, a choice which sparked fan confusion because both the base Pokemon and its shiny version have been in the game for a long time. June’s Community Day has also been announced, featuring the highly requested Gible evolution line. June Community Day will take place on Sunday, June 6.

Pokemon GO is available on iOS and Android mobile devices.
