May 2020 marks another weird month for Pokémon GO. Some areas of the world are beginning to lift their restrictions on social distancing and stay-at-home, but not enough to usher in the return of huge group events. Niantic has to keep up its efforts to introduce new, home-friendly elements to Pokémon GO. One thing that can remain largely unchanged, however, are the monthly Field Research Tasks.
The only real change to Field Research inspired by social distancing is a daily free task. Typically, players have to find and spin a PokéStop to get a Research Task added to their queue. PokéStops tend to be public places, however, so Niantic is making one appear in everyone’s queues each day for the time being. That’s great, because a player really only needs to do one a day to build up to their weekly reward.
Other than that, the daily quests are running the same as usual. Right down to the spawns. There are the standard starters, Pikachu, and Magikarp with shiny chance. The Spinda quest is still there as well, although we’re not sure which pattern is available at this time.
The Silph Road lists all the Research Tasks as they do every month. Looking at them as a whole, we can see a slight trend towards at-home gameplay. There’s only one task based around walking, hatch a single egg. Meanwhile, there are more quests around buddy activity. Those can be done at home easily, so it makes sense.
One quest relates to the GO Battle League, and rewards a Blitzle. This might be a desirable one as many players still haven’t gotten the electric zebra.
Other than that, there aren’t too many amazing tasks here. There’s actually only two quest reward spawns from the new fifth generation, with the bulk dedicated to first gen. That makes sense as we are in the middle of a first gen-focused event. That might mean that new quests will be added every week as each week is a new generation. We hope that’s the case, as May’s quests are a little stale for longtime players. Themed quests are great, but a little more variety would be appreciated.
