Fletchling remains quite an iconic Generation 6 Pokemon due to its rather irresistibly cute appearance. And while the Pokemon games would see Fletchling evolve into the mightier Fletchinder and Talonflame, this first incarnation strikes a chord to those looking for a cute flying Pokemon. As such, it makes sense that Fletchling would grace mobile players in Pokemon GO.
However, Fletchling’s cute exterior shouldn’t make players think it’s a pushover. In Pokemon GO, even the likes of Fletchling can possess quite the efficient moveset to outmatch even its more powerful counterparts. At the hands of the right player, Fletchling can dominate both offense and defense.
Offense: Speed Is Key
For Fletchling, speed almost always leads to a quick victory. Unlike other Pokemon, its attacks indeed suffer from rather middling damage numbers. However, their quick-charge natures mean Fletchling can theoretically outpace enemies with how many times it can throw its Charged Attacks. With the right moveset, Fletchling can become a force to reckon with, especially when timing is involved.
Quick Attack (Normal), Aerial Ace (Flying)
Thanks to Fletchling’s dual Typing, most of its movesets can enjoy the benefits of Same-Type Attack Bonus (STAB). In this case, Fletchling’s go-to offensive combo would have to be Quick Attack and Aerial Ace. As a Normal Move, Quick Attack doesn’t have any particular strengths. However, players do need to watch out against Rock and Steel Types, and even for Quick Attack’s inefficiency against Ghost Types.
Thankfully, Aerial Ace balances this out with its Flying Type nature. The attack is naturally strong against Bug, Fighting, and Grass Pokemon. However, it’s weak against Rock, Steel, and Electric Types. Since only Quick Attack is totally inefficient against a particular Type, this combo doesn’t have any glaring flaws.
Peck (Flying), Aerial Ace (Flying)
The combo of Peck and Aerial Ace will particularly enjoy the STAB buff for Flying Types. As such, both Moves will enjoy an additional boost in firepower when facing natural threats. This buff can stabilize the weakness both Moves have against Rock, Steel, and Electric Types. However, Fletchling users may also want to capitalize the STAB buff to reap attack bonuses against Fighting, Bug, and Grass Types.
Of course, the lack of another Type in the moveset means the combo is inherently weak against Electric, Rock, and Steel Types. Players need to consider adjusting their moveset should they encounter these Typings, particularly if they have Fletchling as their main.
Quick Attack (Normal), Swift (Normal)
Another alternative to the Flying-Flying combo of Peck-Aerial Ace would be Quick Attack and Swift, this time capitalizing on the STAB buff for Normal Type attacks. This time around, both Moves can use the STAB buff to compensate for their weakness against Rock and Steel Types. And unlike Flying Types, Normal Moves can perform neutrally across the board.
Unfortunately, the biggest risk here is if this combo faces Pokemon of Ghost variety, given their inherent inefficiency against Ghost Types. As such, Quick Attack and Swift don’t pose as much attacking power compared to Peck and Aerial Ace.
Quick Attack (Normal), Heat Wave (Fire)
Fletchling can also dish out the heat whenever necessary. In this particular combo, Fletchling capitalizes on Quick Attack as a neutral all-rounder Move, with Heat Wave packing a punch as a charged attack. Since Quick Attack benefits from Fletchling’s STAB buff, it’s easily an ever-reliable attack against most foes.
Meanwhile, despite the lack of a natural buff, Heat Wave as a Fire Move can burn through Bug, Grass, Ice, and Steel Pokemon. Of course, players do need to watch out for Fire Type’s natural weaknesses in the form of Fire, Dragon, Water, and Rock. As such, despite this combo’s merits, Fletchling needs to use this on a more calculated basis.
Peck (Flying), Swift (Normal)
Fletchling gains a STAB buff not from just one but two Move Types this time around. With Peck being the Quick Move and Swift being the Main Move, Fletchling will have a Flying Move on the frontlines. Thankfully, Peck can still dish out decent damage to building up towards powerhouse Swift.
Given their innate strengths, this moveset works best with Peck facing off against Fighting, Bug, and Grass Types. However, its weaknesses means it’s not an ideal Move against Rock, Steel, and Electric Types. Thankfully, Swift can compensate as its nature as a Normal Move makes it a neutral performer against most Types. Fletchling needs to be wary, though, as Swift still won’t work against Ghost Types and is less potent against Rock and Steel Types.
Defense: Sky’s The Limit
Fletchling can capitalize on its Flying Type for defensive purposes. Thanks to the diverse nature of its Typings, Fletchling can accommodate a wide variety of enemies and handle them from a defensive standpoint. Moreover, the quick-generation nature of its Moves can ensure that Fletchling almost always has an ace up its sleeve after a few rounds of its Quick Attacks.
Peck (Flying), Aerial Ace (Flying)
Fletchling on the defense can rely on its trusty Flying-Flying moveset to wreak havoc on attackers. With Peck and Aerial Ace, Fletchling can immediately get STAB buffs for its damage component. In the case of Peck, the STAB buff can enhance its middling base 10 Damage for PVE and base 6 Damage for PVE. Thankfully, Peck does generate 10 Energy per hit, making its lack of damage a reasonable setback.
Moreover, the frequency of Peck can become a great lead-up to Aerial Ace. This Move may only deal base 55 Damage on both PVE and PVP. However, Aerial Ace only costs 33 Energy, making it an extremely frequently charged attack for Fletchling. With the speed-oriented build of this moveset, Fletchling can rest assured it can pull off a decent defense.
Quick Attack (Normal), Aerial Ace (Flying)
Players who want to give their Fletchling a defensive edge would want to try out Quick Attack and Aerial Ace. Thanks to Fletchling’s dual Typing, this moveset also gains benefits from the Pokemon’s STAB buff. Compared to Peck, Quick Attack still generates 10 Energy but now deals a lower base 8 Damage for PVE and base 5 Damage for PVP. However, it’s much faster compared to Peck in terms of frequency.
With this combination in mind, Quick Attack can pose more consistent performance due to the neutral nature of Normal Types. Of course, this Type proves weak against Rock and Steel Types, and ineffective against Ghost Types. It’s also important to consider that while Aerial Ace has Flying Type’s advantage against Fighting, Bug, and Grass Types, it also retains weaknesses against Rock, Steel, and Electric Types.
Peck (Flying), Swift (Normal)
Players who want to try giving their Fletchling the same STAB buff for dual Types might want to switch the Types of their Quick and Main Moves. In this particular moveset, Peck takes the lead as the Quick Move whereas Swift becomes the charged attack. This time around, players may enjoy more frequent bursts of Swift given its low 50 Energy cost and decent 60 Damage on both PVE and PVP.
Despite the potential of this moveset, players do need to note both attack’s vulnerabilities given their natures. As a Quick Move and a more frequent attack, players need to be wary of Peck’s weakness against Rock, Steel, and Electric Types. Thanks to the STAB buff, this move can work exceptionally well against Fighting, Bug, and Grass Types. In the case of Swift, players can enjoy decent performance overall except for the Move’s inefficiency against Ghost Types and weakness against Rock and Steel Types.
Peck (Flying), Heat Wave (Fire)
Fire is the cleanser for this particular defensive build. Peck and Heat Wave works great for a solid multi-Type moveset that can tackle a lot of threats. In the case of Peck, its 10 Energy generation and middling damage numbers get a nifty boost with Fletchling’s STAB buff. Likewise, it’s strength against Fighting, Bug, and Grass Types is an unfortunate threat against various attackers.
Meanwhile, Heat Wave might come at a steep 100 Energy cost. However, it does make up with a whopping 95 Damage for both PVE and PVP. Not to mention, its strength against Bug, Steel, Grass, and Ice Types makes it deadly against quite common attackers. Of course, players need to watch out for the inherent weaknesses of the moveset in the form of Rock, Fire, Water, Dragon, Steel, and Electric Types.
Quick Attack (Normal), Swift (Normal)
Players looking for an extremely speed-based moveset for defense will love Quick Attack and Swift. At its core, this moveset already benefits from the STAB buff given their Normal Typing. However, their fast loadout and fast charge nature make them extremely frequent in combat.
For Quick Attack, its 10 Energy generation can make quick room to meet Swift’s 50 Energy requirement. And while both Moves don’t boast high attack stats, their quick recharge can easily compensate for this. Fletchling players looking for a speed build may love the tempo this moveset generates.
