Pokemon GO Throwback Challenge 2020 Confirmed With Dates Research Tasks and More

Last week, Pokemon GO dataminers discovered the Throwback Challenge 2020 event in the game’s files, teasing one of the game’s biggest quests yet. Now Niantic has officially confirmed the Throwback Challenge 2020, which will provide special events throughout the months of May and June to keep trainers plenty busy.

The Pokemon GO Throwback Challenge 2020 will feature quest-lines based on the Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Unova regions. Each region will get about a week in the spotlight, with players able to complete Timed Research sets to unlock exclusive content and rewards.

The Pokemon GO Throwback Challenge 2020 dates and times are as follows:

  • Throwback Challenge 2020: Kanto Timed Research: Friday, May 1, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. to Friday, May 8, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. local time
  • Throwback Challenge 2020: Johto Timed Research: Friday, May 8, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. to Friday, May 15, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. local time
  • Throwback Challenge 2020: Hoenn Timed Research: Friday, May 15, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. to Friday, May 22, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. local time
  • Throwback Challenge 2020: Sinnoh Timed Research: Friday, May 22, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. to Friday, May 29, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. local time
  • Throwback Challenge Champion 2020 Special Research unlock and event– Wednesday, June 3, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. to Monday, June 8, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. local time

Throwback Challenge 2020 Kanto

Completing all eight sets of Kanto Timed Research will earn Pokemon GO players 10 rare candies and an encounter with Mewtwo that knows the Psytrike move. Additionally, Kanto region Pokemon will appear more frequently in the wild and in raids, and 7km eggs will start hatching rarer Kanto region Pokemon like Onix, Lapras, and more. Pikachus wearing Charizard hats will be available in the wild, and shiny Venonat is being added to the game. Players can also look forward to 2x Catch XP, 2x Raid XP, and 2x Hatch XP bonuses.

Throwback Challenge 2020 Johto

Those that complete the Throwback Challenge 2020 for Johto will get 10 rare candies and an encounter with Ho-Oh that knows Earthquake. Johto region Pokemon will appear in the wild, raids, and in 7km eggs, plus Pikachu wearing an Umbreon hat will appear in the wild. Shiny Dunsparce will be available to catch, and players can also look forward to 2x Catch Stardust and 2x Raid Stardust.



Throwback Challenge 2020 Hoenn

The Hoenn event will let players get 10 rare candies and an encounter with a Groudon that knows Fire Punch. Hoenn region Pokemon will spawn in the wild, raids, and 7km eggs, plus a Pikachu wearing a Rayquaza hat will appear in the wild. Shiny Skitty is being added to the mix as well, plus players will be able to hatch eggs and get buddy Pokemon candy twice as fast.

Throwback Challenge 2020 Sinnoh

The Sinnoh event for Pokemon GO’s Throwback Challenge 2020 will let players get 10 rare candies and an encounter with a Cresselia that knows the Grass Knot attack. Sinnoh Pokemon will appear in the wild, raids, and in 7km eggs, plus there will be a Pikachu with a Lucario hat. Shiny Glameow will be available to catch, and players can also enjoy 1 hour Star Piece duration, 1 hour Incense duration, and 1 hour Lucky Egg duration.

Throwback Challenge Champion 2020

Players that manage to complete all of the Throwback Challenge 2020 research will unlock a new Throwback Challenge Champion 2020 Special Research task revolving around Unova region Pokemon as well as Galarian Pokemon. Players will be able to get five rare candies, Galarian Meowth, Galarian Stunfisk, and an encounter with Genesect. Additionally, Professor Willow’s glasses will be unlocked as an avatar item. This Special Research won’t be timed, so Pokemon GO players don’t have to worry about that.

For this week, Pokemon GO players will be able to find Unova Pokemon more frequently in the wild, plus they will be able to hatch Galarian Pokemon from 7km eggs.
