Yesterday was about the biggest news day that Pokemon GO has ever experienced. The announcement of a new branded update, GO Beyond, revealed a laundry list of new features, changes, and mechanics in the mobile AR game that will shape the experience in the days to come. With all of that news dropping, it was pretty easy to let some smaller announcements get lost in the chaos.

That may have been the case with a surprise extension of the recent distance trading test that was scheduled to conclude on Monday, November 16. As it turns out, the temporary feature is still live and now Pokemon GO players can trade from even further away!

The extended technical test is now scheduled to remain live until November 23 at 4pm PST. The original test seemed to allow trades at a distance of up to 12km between the two trainers. Although the announcement didn’t specify how much that distance was being extended, initial reports seem to indicate that the new limit is somewhere in the 38-50km range. That would come out to around 30 miles apart.

Again, it’s important to keep in mind that Niantic has not announced any plans to permanently add distance trading to the game at this point. So far this has just been a technical test to see what is possible and how stable distance trading is, in case it is used in future events as a special temporary feature.

There’s no denying that the feature is convenient, especially for players who are still social distancing and have been waiting to cash in on a Lucky Friends trade for months now. With Remote Raids already in place and increased ranges for spinning Pokestops, PoGO has done a great job tweaking the rules of the game to make it safer and more enjoyable while social distancing protocols are still in place. With some parts of the world preparing for another wave of lockdowns or stay-at-home orders, it seems smart to have a possible distance trading feature tested and ready to go in case another totally play-from-home event has to happen over the winter holiday season.

As trainers continue working through these amazing events and waiting for the GO Beyond update to officially arrive, they may want to keep hunting down the best Unova Pokemon in the game if improving their Battle Raid rosters and completing their Pokedex is their primary goal. Be sure to check back in the near future for more Pokemon GO strategy guides, news, and updates. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!

Pokemon GO is available now in select regions on Android and iOS devices.
