Pokémon GO Fest 2020 Announcement Teases Shaymin

Pokémon GO Fest 2020 is happening, but due to the current climate the world finds itself in, Niantic has reimagined the entire event.

Niantic has had to alter Pokémon GO in a number of major ways to continue to allow trainers to play throughout the COVID-19 outbreak. The developer can’t be seen to be encouraging its players to leave the house and congregate with others, after all. Instead, it has added — and continues to add — features allowing trainers to play the game from home and while keeping their social distance.

Judging by the latest big announcement by Niantic, it doesn’t see an end to the pandemic coming any time soon. It announced that despite the current circumstances, there will still be a Pokemon GO Fest this year. Not in one city, not even in three cities like the 2019 edition of the event, but across the entire world.

Any and all Pokémon GO players will be allowed to buy a ticket for the event which will take place across July 25 and 26, 2020. Plus, for the first time ever, one ticket will allow players to take part across both days. “Pokémon GO Fest 2020 will take place as an entirely global event in a virtual format, which will allow Trainers worldwide to participate from wherever they play,” the statement reads.

As is often the case when it comes to Pokémon GO announcements, we don’t think everything about the event is clearly laid out in the text. The details are few and far between, but the emphasis on grass-types and greenery in the featured image might be a clue as to what trainers should expect during the event. The final line of the statement could also hint at a Pokémon making its debut that weekend.

“Until we can all meet again in the same park and under the same sky,” could be a reference to Shaymin’s two forms. The legendary Sinnoh Pokémon is yet to appear in Pokémon GO. GO Fest 2020 could be where it makes its debut. That would presumably require including a way to transform Shaymin’s land form into its sky form via the addition of a new item to the game.
