Eevee is easily one the most beloved Pokemon in the franchise, having recently been voted the fifth most popular Pokemon of all time. If Eevee’s popularity isn’t enough, its evolutions Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon, and Sylveon are also some of the most recognizable and beloved within the whole franchise.
With Sylveon being the final Eeveelution to make an appearance, it may be time to make sure you’ve cleared up all the previous Eveelutions in your Pokedex as well. Eevee’s evolutions almost all have unique methods of evolution in GO, alongside specific nicknames you can give them in order to easily obtain them for your collection.

Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon
The first three evolutions — Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon — were all released alongside Eevee in the original Gen I’s Red and Blue titles. These were all easily acquired by using one of the three evolutionary stones on your Eevee: a Water Stone for Vaporeon, a Thunder Stone for Jolteon, or a Fire Stone for Flareon.
These items never came to exist in Pokemon GO, and instead, the result of your Eevee’s evolution upon using the 25 candies is left completely up to chance between the three.
If you’re desperate for a particular evolution, there are specific nicknames you may use on your Eevee to guarantee obtaining each one. However, each of these names can only be used once.
The nicknames are Rainer for Vaporeon, Sparky for Jolteon, and Pyro for Flareon. If you’re wondering where these nicknames came from, they’re actually from an episode of the anime titled ‘The Battling Eevee Brothers’ where trainers Rainer, Sparky, and Pyro each owned a Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon, respectively.
Espeon
Espeon is Eevee’s Psychic-type evolution, first seen in Gen II’s Gold and Silver. Espeon and Umbreon were among the first Pokemon to evolve via friendship rather than with levels or evolutionary stones, and this hasn’t changed for Pokemon GO.
Espeon can be obtained by adding the Eevee you wish to evolve as your in-game buddy. Walk with Eevee as your buddy for 10 km, then use those 25 Eevee candies on it during the day. This should give you Espeon. However, if you want an Espeon faster, you can use the nickname Sakura. Like the Gen I evolution nicknames, though, this will only work once.
Umbreon
Umbreon is Eevee’s Dark-type evolution, also first seen in Gen II’s Gold and Silver. Umbreon has a similar evolution to Espeon in GO, with you once again needing to add it as your buddy for a 10 km walk. After walking, make sure it’s night in the game, and then use your 25 Eevee candies to secure Umbreon.
Giving your Eevee the nickname Tamao will automatically cause the Eevee to evolve into Umbreon (again, one time only). Sakura and Tamao were actually the names of two of the Kimono Girls in the Pokemon Episode ‘Troubles Brewing,’ with Sakura owning an Espeon and Tamao, an Umbreon.
Leafeon
Leafeon is Eevee’s Grass-type evolution, first appearing in Gen IV’s Diamond and Pearl. Leafeon could originally be obtained in the games by levelling up next to Eterna Forest’s ‘Mossy Rock’ which has subsequently been placed into later titles. However, in Gen VII’s Sword & Shield, this has since been changed to a Leaf Stone.
In Pokemon GO, you need to instead implement the use of a ‘Mossy Lure’ on a Pokestop, which maybe be purchased for 200 coins (they’re also sometimes given out as quest rewards). The Mossy Lure acts like a normal lure, but instead attracts Grass-, Bug- and Poison-type Pokemon for 30 minutes.
Being nearby a Pokestop fitted with a Mossy Lure will also allow you to evolve Eevee into Leafeon. The one-use nickname to evolve your Eevee into Leafeon is Linnea, named after a trainer found on Hano Beach who uses one in Pokemon Sun & Moon.
Glaceon
Glaceon is Eevee’s Ice-type evolution appearing alongside Leafeon in Gen IV’s Diamond and Pearl. Glaceon was originally obtained by leveling up an Eevee near the ‘Ice Rock’ south of Snowpoint City on Route 217, and has subsequently been placed in various locations in later titles. However, in Gen VII’s Sword & Shield, Eevee can now be evolved into Glaceon by using an Ice Stone.
In Pokemon GO, Glaceon can be obtained similarly to Leafeon but by using a Glacial Lure on a Pokestop. Glacial Lures will attract Water- and Ice-type Pokemon for 30 minutes, as well as allowing you to evolve your Eevee into Glaceon. The one-time nickname for Glaceon is Rea, named after a trainer in Pokemon Sun & Moon’s Iki town, who uses one.
Sylveon
Sylveon is the eighth Eeveelution, a Fairy-type first introduced in Gen VI’s X & Y. Its evolution originally used X & Y’s ‘Pokemon Amie’ system, which allowed you to pet and play with the Pokemon you caught.
After teaching your Eevee a Fairy-type move, you would need to fill all three Amie sections — affection, fullness, and enjoyment — up to max and then level up to get your Sylveon. This has changed in later generations, with Sun & Moon using the ‘Pokemon Refresh’ system and later with Sword & Shield needing you to get an Eevee to three-hearts of friendship.
Sylveon was released in Pokemon GO with the second part of the Luminous Legends Y event and can be evolved from any Eevee through the buddy system, as seen with Espeon and Umbreon. Through walking, playing, and feeding your Eevee buddy you’ll gain hearts —similar to the main series games. Once you reach 70 hearts, you’ll be able to evolve your Eevee into Sylveon.
The one-time nickname for Sylveon has also been confirmed as Kira, named for the granddaughter of the original Sylveon user Sakura, who now looks after her prized Pokemon in Seafolk Village in Sun & Moon.
