In August, Niantic announced a series of Mega Evolution event weeks throughout September in Pokémon GO. Following a furious week of activity in the first week to unlock Mega Pidgeot, trainers have to band together during the second week to unlock Mega Houndoom. This week’s event began Friday, Sept. 11 at 8 a.m. and it will go until Thursday, Sept. 17 at 10 p.m. local time.

Similar to how trainers aimed to unlock Mega Pidgeot during week one, the community will need to complete 275 million battles for Mega Houndoom. These can include Gym battles, Team GO Rocket battles or trainer battles (excluding GO Battle League battles).

Once 275 million battles have been completed, Mega Houndoom will be available in-game moving forward — once Niantic releases an update, at least. Players should use Mega-Evolved Pokémon in their battles to unlock Mega Houndoom.

Similar to the first week of Pokémon GO Mega Evolution events, this week sees bug-type Pokémon appearing more often in the wild: Caterpie, Weedle, Paras, Venonat, Scyther, Pinsir, Ledyba, Spinarak, Wurmple, Kricketot and Burmy. There’s also the possibility for a Shiny Ledybda encounter.

This week also features Beedrill, Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise Mega Energy that can be acquired from completing event-exclusive research tasks, as well as a limited time Special research task. The limited-time research task includes battling in raids, winning Mega Raids and powering up Pokémon. If players are able to complete the Mega Evolution themed Timed Research story, they will unlock an extra treat during Halloween.

The next Mega Evolution event week, which is focused around being buddies with Mega-Evolved Pokémon, will run from Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 8 a.m. until Monday, Sept. 28 at 10 p.m. local time. There are no challenges or tasks to accomplish during this week, but there will be bonuses still, along with releasing a Timed Research at the end of September to usher in the spooky season. If players complete it, they can unlock an exclusive Timed Research during this year’s Halloween Event that features Mega Gengar for the first time in Pokémon GO.

Bonuses for the third week of Mega Evolution events include double Poffin duration, large Pokémon appearing more frequently in the wild and the chance to catch a Shiny Doduo. There will also be an increase in Beedrill Mega Energy received from Field Research.
