Pokemon GO has enjoyed surprisingly consistent popularity for five years now. A lot of that is down to developer Niantic’s continued support for the game, offering plenty of new content over the years. But for those for whom even the regular updates and improvements aren’t enough, there are always communities of dataminers who are more than happy to dig deep into the code of every patch and give a glimpse of what may be yet to come.

There’s a lot to love about Pokemon GO’s current state: there are now hundreds of Pokemon available to catch from generations 1 through 5, Mega Evolutions and Mega Raids were introduced last year, and more recent updates made several small but much-needed tweaks to things like friend lists, item frequency, and hitboxes. But if that still isn’t enough, datamining group PokeMiners has been poking through the current version to see what can be found, and they’ve turned up some interesting info about the game’s PokeStops.

PokeStops have been a staple of Pokemon GO since the beginning, popping up on the in-game map as landmarks that players can interact with to get items like Eggs, Pokeballs, Potions, and more. According to a tutorial found by PokeMiners, players could soon be able to upgrade Pokestops, possibly offering better quality items or a larger radius for interaction. The exact steps for powering up the PokeStops aren’t entirely clear, but it appears that there are four levels available, with the Pokestop growing taller each time.

The final image, showing numerous trainers surrounding and interacting with a single PokeStop, has garnered plenty of discussion and theorizing of its own. It could indicate that the process to upgrade Pokestops requires, or at least is made easier by, multiple Pokemon trainers putting in the work, or that the boons of a powered-up PokeStop can be enjoyed by any trainer in the vicinity, not just by whoever initiated the process.

Naturally, much of this information is speculation and not set in stone, as PokeMiners was quick to remind its followers. Datamined information always carries with it the risk that the content might change or even be scrapped entirely before it makes its way to consumers, and the group found no evidence that the feature had been quietly included in the background of the current version of the APK.

Still, after five years of the same Pokestops offering the same experience, perhaps Niantic has decided that it’s time for a change. Updating the ubiquitous blue Poke-icons with some brand new functionality and some reliably top-tier items to help out with the various challenges Pokemon GO offers its players could be just the thing to keep the game going for another half-decade.

Pokemon GO is out now for iOS and Android mobile devices.
