One reason Pokemon GO became such a popular mobile hit is due to its constant support, events, and more. Since inception, new research tasks, events, Special Research, trading, raiding, and more have all grown considerably, adapting to what players want and need. Pokemon GO has managed this once again, suiting its otherwise “get out and go” methodology to accommodate social distancing and the ability to play from home.
It’ll be interesting to see how Pokemon GO looks after the coronavirus pandemic comes to an official end. but barring any unforeseen delay as a result of said virus, there is one thing players can look foward to later this year: Gen 6, Kalos, and its new starters (Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie). Looking back may even give players an idea of what to expect.

At first glance, its release schedule appears to be a bit sporadic when it comes to the launch of new Pokemon, and it’s worth mentioning that each date was the first wave. More and more Pokemon typically release in the following weeks, yet in context, this makes a lot of sense. The early days of Pokemon GO did not have near as much for players to do as they do now, so releases were more frequent to keep players active. Roughly half a year or so passed between its initial release date to its Gen 2 Pokemon and then its Gen 3 Pokemon.
After that, however, there’s a year jump from Gen 3 to Gen 4 and practically another year jump from Gen 4 to Gen 5 in Pokemon GO. Teases for the next gen typically appear around August, and the release follows after that. As such, it stands to reason that the most likely window is sometime in September or October, with the latter being more likely based on the above pattern. However, there’s one more important thing to note.
Pokemon GO Gen 6 Release Window and Pokemon
Gen 3, Gen 4, and Gen 5 Pokemon all released before Halloween, and for good reason. Pokemon GO’s Halloween event is typically one of its most popular, so combining that with new Pokemon is practically a recipe for success. This all relies on coronavirus causing no major delays, however, hopefully clearing the fall well before and allowing normal work practices to resume.
Of course, the next question after when new Pokemon will release is what new Pokemon will release. Typically, around a score or so Pokemon are released at first, which given that Kalos introduced 72 new Pokemon to the franchise, means fans can expect about 25% of the new Pokemon to be available. In past generations, this is typically the starters as well as the early, more generic Pokemon. As far as predictions go, it seems like a safe bet that Bunnelby, Fletchling, Flabebe, Pancham, Spritzee, Spirlix, and their evolutions will likely join the Kalos Starters in the first wave or so.
It seems like Honedge and others will lead the Halloween event, whereas there are certainly some left aside, some set as region exlusives, and others such as potentially Litleo saved for special occasions or releases. Fan shouldn’t expect to see Gen 6 legendaries in Pokemon GO for quite some time afterward; while it all does remain to be seen, it seems Pokemon GO may have a strong summer after adapting these new social distancing regulations. As such, that momentum may very well carry over into a big gen 6 release as well.
