Pokémon is a series that has been going on since the ’90s and has shown hundreds of compelling characters. One of the series mainstays is James, a character who has been present since the beginning of the series and is an acting member of Team Rocket. He has appeared in the anime, movies, games, and even the comic series.

James is an interesting antagonist that most fans note isn’t really that bad of a guy and is actually a rather kind person to those around him. There is a lot to James’ character, and he has a pretty fleshed out backstory that may surprise some newer fans.

Another key thing to note about James is that he is actually a millionaire. James was born into an incredibly wealthy family, and couldn’t stand living the upscale lifestyle and dealing with the burden of high society.

Despite running off to join Team Rocket, his parents are still pining for James to come home and settle down. James seems to want to avoid this situation at all costs.

8 He Was A Lonely Child

James didn’t have many friends aside from his fiancée Jessebelle growing up. His parents were also busy thanks to their status, so James seemed to have been left to his own devices during most of his childhood.

It is stated that James may have grown close to Pokémon in his use in order to make friends and have companionship as a young child.

7 He Is A Grandparents’ Boy

Despite the fact that James wants to avoid Jessebelle and his parents, he is a family man. James loves his grandparents, as is seen in the Diamond & Pearl season, where he does everything in his power to hide his job.

While James joined Team Rocket to spite his parents and escape from high society, he never wanted to disappoint his grandparents, who he truly cherished.

James is a pushover who is bad at being assertive even when put into bad situations. Because of this and the fact that he is incredibly gullible, he falls prey to the Magikarp salesman several times throughout the series.

It all starts aboard the S.S. Anne when he buys a supposed golden Magikarp from the seller, only to soon find out that it is just a normal orange Magikarp.

Despite being raised well, it doesn’t seem like James focused very much on school or developing proper study habits. In fact, it is revealed that he actually had the lowest scores while in trainer school.

This can also be seen when James and Jessie are coming up with ideas, as they don’t seem to really know how to make an intricate plan that will actually work.

3 James Is Kinder Than He Looks

James is often shown to be a rather kind character and is more than happy to be kind to his Pokémon. This is shown in the way he reacts to being eaten, pricked, and injured by his multiple Poison and Grass-type Pokémon.

James is also revealed to have helped Pokémon who were in trouble as a child, despite not ever trying to capture them or add them to his team.
