With every new Pokemon game, fans are always anxious to see what sorts of new monsters will be included in each title, adding to the massive number of entries in the National PokeDex. Pokemon Sun and Moon introduced regional Pokemon forms that alter a Pokemon’s appearance and abilities based on where they’re found, just like different species of the same animal in real life. Ever since the 3DS games came out, fans have been guessing which Pokemon will get regional variants as well with each new game, and the upcoming Pokemon Legends: Arceus has already begun teasing a handful of regional-specific Pokemon for its roster.

The most recently announced new Pokemon are the Hisuian Zorua and Zoroark, which were teased in a “found footage” style trailer for Pokemon Legends: Arceus before officially being revealed as new Pokemon by Game Freak. The Hisuian versions of both evolutions differ from their original forms in some major ways, so it’ll be interesting to see what other changes between the variants there are in the final version of the game.

Hisuian Zorua and Zoroark’s New Type

Originally, Zorua and Zoroark were introduced in the fifth generation of Pokemon, in the Unova region for Pokemon Black and White as mono-type Dark Pokemon. For the Hisui region, however, they’ve both changed into dual-type Ghost/Normal Pokemon, the first PokeDex entries to combine the two types. Now, the Unovan Zorua and Zoroark have a type-based advantage over their Hisuian counterparts, but it’s still to be seen if Pokemon Legends: Arceus will feature the original versions, as previous Pokemon games haven’t included multiple variants of the same Pokemon.

There hasn’t been any official information on Hisuian Zorua or Zoroark’s movesets yet, but per their dual-typing, they’ll likely have less powerful Normal types at a weaker level, but gain the more devastating Ghost moves as they progress and Zorua evolves into Zoroark.

As Ghost/Normal Pokemon, the pair have a pretty large advantage based on the fact that they have three type immunities: Ghost, Normal, and Fighting, but also will take half damage from bug-type and poison-type moves. Essentially, the two Hisuian variants have already set themselves up to be highly versatile picks for good team composition. All that’s left to really seal them into “must-have” Pokemon is their move list, which likely won’t be seen until Pokemon Legends: Arceus finally comes out.

Hisuian Zorua and Zoroark’s PokeDex Entries

There aren’t official PokeDex entries for the new Pokemon variants yet. However, the official Pokemon Twitter account tweeted out some details about the two new additions that seem like they could be the official entries for the pair. Weirdly enough, the adorable Zorua has a tragic and heartbreaking backstory that really illustrates the differences between the Hisuian forms and the Unovan ones. Essentially, in ancient times, Unovan Zorua were shunned by the people of Unova so they migrated to Hisui. However, due to the harsh conditions of the region, they all died, but their vengeful spirits manifested into the Ghost/Normal Pokemon that will appear in the game.

Zoroark’s PokeDex entry, on the other hand, didn’t mention anything dark like Zorua’s did, however, it does say that it’s completely untrusting of outsiders and only bonds with the people and Pokemon that it considers family. These trust issues seem to be a result of the Pokemon’s past trouble with outsiders, but it also potentially implies that trainers will need to increase their friendship level with the Pokemon to properly train it. There are plenty of dark PokeDex entries, however, it’s a little shocking how sad Zorua’s backstory became as it originally started out as an adorable trickster.
