Since their debut in Pokémon Gold & Silver, Shiny Pokémon have been fan-favorite additions to any game they appear in. Previously, Shiny Pokémon had been largely absent from the Mystery Dungeon side series, with the exception of some NPCs and a Japan-only Wii-Ware games. However, this all changed with Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, which allows players to recruit certain Shiny creatures.

Before beginning, it is crucial to note that only a some Pokémon can appear Shiny in the game. Theses are Butterfree, Ninetales, Rapidash, Electrode, Exeggcute, Exeggutor, Starmie, Magikarp, Gyarados, Ditto, Dragonite, Hoothoot, Noctowl, Ampharos, Azumarill, Sudowoodo, Aipom, Espeon, Wobbufett, Shuckle, Corsola, Celebi, Spinda, Altaria, Zangoose, Metagross, Ambipom and Lickilicky.

When selecting a dungeon, a yellow symbol will show next to the dungeon name if a Strong Foe can spawn within it. Highlighting the dungeon will reveal which Pokémon it is. Only Strong Foes can appear Shiny, so begin by simply selecting which Shiny Pokémon you wish to hunt. Then, make sure you have a strong team of Pokémon dedicated to recruiting. Ideally, this means Pokémon with the Friendly and Squad Up Rare Qualities, plus a lead equipped with a Friend Bow. To maximize your odds, make sure your lead holding the Friend Bow also knows False Swipe, as defeating a Pokémon with the move increases the chance they will join the team.

Before heading out, grab some Orbs, specifically the Inviting Orb to further increase recruit rates and the Rare Quality Orb, which does the same for Pokémon with a Rare Quality. With all these effects stacked, your recruitment rate is as high as it can possibly be.

As soon as you enter the dungeon, start knocking out any Pokémon you come across. The first goal is to fill the team with eight members, the maximum for any one dungeon. Doing so will maximize the effect of Squad Up, which increases the recruit rate the more team members you currently have. With that done, you’ll need a little luck. Strong Foes are not incredibly rare, but they don’t always spawn and only do so starting from specific floors that vary by dungeon.

The best strategy is to spend as much time as possible on a given floor until being forced to move on. Eventually, a Strong Foe is likely to spawn. While the exact Shiny spawn rates are unknown, it is much lower than in the mainline games. Shiny Pokémon will spawn fairly uncommonly, and as soon as they do, it’s time to fight. First, make sure that the rest of your team is set to not use moves, as if a teammate lands the final blow, the Pokémon cannot be recruited.

After locating the Shiny and ensuring teammates can’t attack it, use your Inviting Orb and Rare Quality Orb. If possible, stand at the end of a hallway to ensure there is absolutely no chance other teammates can deal damage. Defeat the Shiny (though be aware that this can be a difficult task depending on how far into the game your chosen dungeon is) preferably with False Swipe and hope you’ll get lucky. If not, remain on the same floor for as long as possible before being forced to move on, and repeat this method on the next floor. This may take several battles — or even several dungeon runs — but it will eventually yield the results you seek.

The outlier here is Celebi. It is the only Pokemon that isn’t a Strong Foe, and also the only legendary or mythical Pokemon that can appear Shiny in the game. Celebi gains this status as a reference to the Shiny Celebi that appears prominently in Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness & Sky. To recruit a Shiny Celebi, players must first conquer the utterly daunting Purity Forest — a dungeon that requires a single Pokemon to enter at level 5 and clear 99 floors.

Purity Forest is the game’s ultimate challenge and requires a fair bit of luck to complete. Upon finally doing so, Celebi awaits at the end of the dungeon, and will automatically join the rescue team. With Celebi recruited, you will gain access to its Rescue Camp, Healing Forest. After hitting this milestone, Shiny Celebi can rarely spawn inside Mystery Houses within dungeons. These pre-requisites make it the most difficult Shiny to obtain in the game.

There are a total of 27 Shiny Pokemon available in Rescue Team DX. Recruiting them all will surely require a lot of luck, but with the methods outlined here, you should have everything you need to begin your search for these elusive creatures.
