Later this year, Pokemon fans will get the chance to revisit the Sinnoh Region on the Nintendo Switch through Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, remakes of the DS-era main series Pokemon games. However, there are still those that play the original Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum games regularly, even with remakes on the horizon. In fact, some may even be playing through games like Pokemon Platinum for the first time, as was the case with Reddit user N_E_ON.

While playing through Pokemon Platinum, Reddit user N_E_ON reached Snowpoint City. Upon arriving, they ran into a Pokemon trainer named Mindy, who was offering to trade a Haunter in exchange for a Medicham. For the uninitiated, trading a Haunter in the main series Pokemon games makes it evolve into Gengar, which is one of N_E_ON’s favorite Pokemon. N_E_ON has never been able to use Gengar in the Pokemon games because they didn’t have anyone to trade with, and so they were excited to trade with Mindy to finally add one to their team.

N_E_ON then spent hours first looking for a Meditite to catch and then training that Meditite to level 37 until it evolved into Medicham. After spending about six hours leveling up Meditite in Pokemon Platinum, N_E_ON returned to Snowpoint City and spoke with Mindy. And that’s when disaster struck.

After completing the Pokemon trade with Mindy, N_E_ON was shocked to learn that the Haunter Mindy trades is holding an Everstone. In the Pokemon video games, a Pokemon holding an Everstone is unable to evolve. This meant that N_E_ON spent all that time to catch a Meditite and evolve it into a Medicham to trade for a Gengar, only for it to still be impossible for them to get their Gengar.

N_E_ON’s post on Reddit has amassed over 10,000 upvotes and over 400 comments as other users share their bad experiences with Mindy. It seems that many Pokemon Platinum players had a similarly negative experience when trading Mindy for a Haunter, as they too had expected to get a Gengar in return. Considering how many people seem to dislike the Mindy NPC in Pokemon Platinum, it will be interesting to see if she is removed in the upcoming Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl games, or if the encounter is tweaked so that Haunter is at least no longer holding an Everstone.

If there are any plans to change the Mindy encounter in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, they haven’t been announced so far. Based on the Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl gameplay that’s been shown to date, the games seem to be pretty faithful recreations of the Generation 4 Pokemon games, so don’t be surprised if Mindy is still trading a Haunter with an Everstone in the new games.

Pokemon Platinum is out now, exclusively for the Nintendo DS.
