Pokemon Sword and Shield Datamine Reveals New Gigantamax Forms

The pre-launch leaks for Pokemon Sword and Shield just keep coming, and this time a datamine is revealing more in-depth data for the upcoming Switch titles. The datamine has unearthed a set of Gigantamax forms that were not yet revealed, for both older, returning Pokemon and some of the new monsters.

A few days ago, a new trailer for Pokemon Sword and Shield revealed some new Gigantamax forms, including Gigantamax Charizard and Eevee. The datamine implies that there are even more forms to discover, but it’s difficult to tell if the forms are actually available in-game, or if these forms are just in the game’s files.

In a new datamine thread on the competitive Pokemon community Smogon, more information about Pokemon Sword and Shield is being revealed as the game marches towards its Friday release. The datamine has a lot of new information on aspects of the game that would be difficult for normal players to confirm on their own, including what Pokemon moves were cut from Sword and Shield. This wealth of information includes another set of Gigantamax forms that haven’t been revealed yet.

The additional Gigantamax forms found in the data files are for the following Pokemon: Machamp, Snorlax, Melmetal, Orbeetle, Sandaconda, and Toxtricity. Melmetal in particular is an interesting addition, as the Pokemon GO exclusive Pokemon was not thought to be included in the Galar Pokedex. Over 500 Pokemon were cut from the Pokemon Sword and Shield Pokedex, and Melmetal was originally thought to be one of them. Which begs the question – is the original Pokedex leak incomplete, or will Game Freak add specific Pokemon to the game in the future?

Since this is a datamine, while the Gigantamax Pokemon are technically within the game files, it’s hard to tell if the forms will be available in the game naturally. These new forms might be used for future events or even Gigantamax forms that were originally going to be in the game but scrapped at some point. Files are often found in games that serve no actual use, so unless someone finds the form in-game, they may not actually be available right away.

Regardless, at least the datamine is likely legitimate. Whether this means something in terms of more content remains to be seen until the game gets into more hands.

Pokemon Sword and Shield will be available exclusively on the Nintendo Switch on November 15.
