Pokemon Sword and Shield How Giant Pokemon Work

Pokemon Sword and Shield feature a new gameplay feature known as Dynamax-ing. When a Pokemon is Dynamaxed, it turns into a giant, more powerful version of itself, leading to some epic giant Pokemon battles. More than that, though, Pokemon Sword and Shield will showcase special raid battles which will allow up to 4 players an attempt at catching a special Dynamax wild Pokemon.

It wasn’t revealed how early on Dynamax-ing would be unlocked, but Pokemon Sword and Shield players will certainly want it sooner rather than later. This giant Pokemon mechanic is a unique gimmick that separates gen 8 from all previous titles and will likely receive a lot of attention after Pokemon Sword and Shield’s November 15th release date. Here’s everything we currently know about the new gameplay feature.

The Nintendo Direct states that Dynamax-ing happens in heated battles, so it’s unclear if there’s some special condition in Pokemon Sword and Shield that allows it to happen, but regardless, Dynamax-ing pokemon increases both its size and its power stat. The moves of a Dynamax Pokemon were described as ‘powerful max moves,’ likely suggesting that each move now has a powered-up version of itself OR every move will deal the maximum amount of damage possible.

Of course, as powerful as this new Pokemon Sword and Shield feature sounds, there are some limits. It can only be activated once per battle, and it only lasts for 3 turns. The Dynamax Pokemon will revert back to normal after the turns have passed, but a power boost in battle isn’t the only use of the feature. Players will be able to participate in 4-players Max Raid battles against wild Dynamax Pokemon (their Dynamax ability isn’t limited to 3 turns), and only one of those trainers will be able to Dynamax their Pokemon. It was also confirmed that some Gym Leaders would have access to Dynamax Pokemon.

So much was revealed during this Nintendo Direct, and more is likely to come as E3 begins in a couple of days. Another reveal during this Pokemon Sword and Shield direct was the mascot wolf legendaries, Zacian and Zamazenta. It’s uncertain if legendary Pokemon can take part in this Giant Pokemon feature or not. Needless to say, November 15 can’t arrive early enough for Pokemon diehards.

Pokemon Sword and Shield are set to launch on November 15, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
