The Official Pokémon YouTube Channel has released a new video with an update for Pokémon Sword & Shield, which has revealed the new villainous team, two new rivals, and the existence of Galarian forms.

Pokémon Sun & Moon introduced the concept of Alolan forms, which were established Pokémon that had evolved in different ways due to existing in a new climate. It seems that the Galar region will have a similar effect, as there are now Galarian forms for different Pokémon.

The trailer showed Galarian Weezing, which now has little chimney top hats and fancy facial hair made from sludge. Galarian Weezing is now Poison/Fairy-type and has a new second Ability. There is also Galarian Zigzagoon, which is now Dark/Normal-type and can evolve into Galarian Linoone, which also has the new typing. Galarian Linoone now has an evolution, called Obstagoon, which looks like a werebadger.

There are also some new Pokémon being added to the game outside of Galarian forms. The trailer revealed an Electric/Dark-type hamster Pokémon called Morpeko, whose moves are transformed based on its hunger, which is likely related to eating berries in battle. Morpeko has a “Hangry Mode,” where its body turns black and its Aura Wheel move switches from Electric-type to Dark-type.

It had previously been established that the rival in Pokémon Sword & Shield was a guy named Hop, but it turns out that there are two more – Bede and Marnie. Bede looks like an arrogant jerk in the same manner as Blue (which is something fans have been asking for after years of nice rivals), while Marnie looks like a punk rock chick.

The villainous team in Pokémon Sword & Shield is Team Yell, who all appear to be a group of punk rockers, which fits into the Galar region’s UK theme.

The new trailer for Pokémon Sword & Shield seems to confirm a leak from 4chan earlier this year, which was already looking legitimate after Gigantamaxing was confirmed. This means that there is likely a Legendary Pokémon called Eternatus, Pikachu has a Gigantamax form, Farfetch’d and Meowth will have Galarian forms, and there is a Fairy-type Gym lead by a woman named Opal.

The controversy surrounding the National Dex has harmed the attitude towards Pokémon Sword & Shield going in, but the new trailer has shown a lot of welcome additions to the games that have us excited for years.

Pokémon Sword & Shield will be released for the Nintendo Switch on November 15, 2019.
