Fairy-types are gaining ground in the Pokéverse! Both Pokemon Sword and Shield are loaded with Fairy-types, and gamers are thrilled! Although Game Freak didn’t get around to introducing Fairy-types until Gen 6, the fairies have already cemented themselves as fan favorites, due to their creative designs and wonderful versatility.

If players want a strong and versatile team, then they are going to need at least one Fairy-type or some Fairy-type combination. Now that both rounds of DLCs have been released and the region is complete, let’s take a look at the best areas to explore to find Fairy-types in Pokemon Sword and Shield.

One of the most praised features of these games is the proliferation of Fairy-types. We thought it best to update this list to include more details about these creatures and organize the information a bit better.

So, let’s take an in-depth look at each of these areas and the Pokemon that can be found there. We will also review what makes each of these creatures interesting, just how useful they are in gameplay, and any special conditions that need to be met for their capture.

10 Lake of Outrage

The Lake of Outrage is a lake and cliffside area in the northwest of the Wild Area. It connects to Giant’s Cap and features a circle of large, upright stones. Fairy-types abound here and different ones will appear in different types of weather.

Here are the Fairy-types players can find at The Lake of Outrage:

• Gardevoir is a fantastic Pokemon, having very high Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed, as well as only being weak to Poison, Ghost, and Steel, making it quite the powerhouse. Players can find Gardevoir here in normal weather.
• Hatterene has a lot of the same positives as Gardevoir, although it is much slower and has a higher Defense stat. Players can find Hatterene here in normal weather.
• Galarian Weezing, which has its own special design in Gen 8, is a very interesting Pokemon. It has high Defense with good Attack and Special Attack, but what really makes it stand out are its abilities. It can have Levitate, removing one of its weaknesses (making it only weak to Steel and Psychic), Neutralizing Gas can turn off all abilities in battle, and Misty Surge, activating Misty Terrain whenever its sent in. In overcast conditions, you can find Weezing at the Lake of Outrage.
• Grimmsnarl has a rather deceptive appearance. Despite what its design and high HP, Attack, and Special Attack stats would have you believe, it actually works best as a support Pokemon thanks to its Ability, Prankster. This lets it set up moves like Reflect or Light Screen before your opponent can even move. Combine this with its only weaknesses being Poison, Steel, and Fairy, and you have a capable team member on your hands. No special conditions are required to find Grimmsnarl here.
• Shiinotic is, simply put, not very impressive. While its Defense, Special Attack, and Special Defense stats range from average to good, its so incredibly slow and has a lot of weaknesses (Flying, Poison, Steel, Ice, and Fire) that it is extremely easy to KO. Shiinotic can be found here if it is raining.
• Sylveon is a beast when used properly. White its movepool is lacking, it has very high HP, Special Attack, and Special Defense stats, as well as access to the very powerful ability, Pixilate, turning all of its Normal-type moves into Fairy-type moves and giving them a power boost. This combines very well with the move Hyper Voice and the Throat Spray item. Pure Fairy is also a fantastic type, giving only 2 weaknesses, Steel and Poison. Sylveon can be found at Lake of Outrage during partially sunny daytime.

9 Route 4

Route 4 of the Galar Region is located just north of the Galar Mine and Turffield. It is a straightforward route with a lot of vibrant, yellow grass. The Pokémon Cutiefly and Milcery can be found in the grass here as random encounters in both versions. Eevee is also located here and can turn into Sylveon if you level Eevee up with high friendship while simultaneously knowing a Fairy-type move. The Sylveon evolution was one of the original Fairy-types introduced in Gen 6.

Here are more Fairy-types players can find on Route 4:

• Ribombee is the textbook definition of strong, but fragile. It has many weaknesses in Steel, Fire, Poison, Rock, and Flying with its defenses being terrible, but that is made up for how fast it is in addition to its high Special Attack. Shield Dust is also a really good ability, preventing Ribombee from being affected by any additional effects moves have.
• Alcremie has the wonderful pure Fairy typing with its only 2 weaknesses being Steel and Poison, as well as boasting really high Special Attack and Special Defense. Decorate is a great move in Double Battles, as it allows you to boost your partner Pokemon’s stats at only the cost of Alcremie’s turn.

8 Stony Wilderness

The Stony Wilderness is a location found just south of the town of Hammerlocke in the Wild Area. A bunch of Fairy-types can be found here in the grass as random encounters depending on the area’s weather. Cottonee can be found here if it’s cloudy, Ribombee if it’s either clear or cloudy, Spritzee if it’s cloudy (Shield only), Swirlix if it’s cloudy (Sword only), and Impidimp in any weather except for sandstorm.

More Fairy-types found here are:

• Togekiss is a beast of a Pokemon! It has amazing stats (with Attack being its only bad one), 2 incredible abilities in Super Luck (makes Critical Hits more common), and Serene Grace (makes additional effects of moves happen more often), and it also has a fantastic movepool, learning good moves from a good chunk of every Pokemon type. The only bad thing there really is to say about Togekiss is that it does have 5 weaknesses, those being Poison, Ice, Rock, Electric, and Steel. Togetic can be found in this area in fog.
• Whimsicott is an excellent support Pokemon, but it doesn’t really do much of anything else. It’s amazingly fast, but the rest of its stats are poor, and the type combination gives it a lot of weaknesses, making it super easy to get rid of.
• There isn’t much to say about either Slurpuff or Aromatisse. They have the great pure Fairy typing, and in terms of stats, Slurpuff is very balanced and Aromatisse has high HP, Special Attack, and Special Defense, but other than that they don’t really stand out much.

7 Glimwood Tangle

Glimwood Tangle is an area that can be accessed as soon as a player completes Stow-on-Side’s gym. It is a dark forest, dimly lit with glowing mushrooms. It contains several Fairy-type Pokemon, some of which are version-dependent. Due to the darkness, Dusk Balls are the way to go here.

• Morgrem, Shiinotic, and Hattrem can be found in either version (the last of which isn’t a Fairy-type initially, but it does evolve into one), Sword exclusively has Swirlix, and Shield exclusively has Pontya (also needs to evolve to get its Fairy typing) and Spritzee. All of these Pokemon can be found in the grass as random encounters.
• Galarian Rapidash is extremely disappointing. It has the exact same stats as regular Rapidash, which normally wouldn’t be a bad thing, except for the fact this does not complement its type combination (Psychic/Fairy) at all. In addition to being a combination that’s already pretty oversaturated, Psychic/Fairy is a type combination that works with special attackers, but Rapidash is a physical attacker, leading to a very annoying disconnect. Plus, Pastel Veil is its only useful ability, but even then, its still extremely situational. Galarian Rapidash is good enough to get the job done as a team member, just don’t expect it to be outstanding.

6 Dusty Bowl

The Dusty Bowl is located in the center of the northern end of the Wild Area. If a player is looking for Fairy-types, Gardevoir, Meowstic, and Hattrem can all be found here.

However, the real reason to visit the Dusty Bowl is that, in foggy conditions, Togekiss can be found flying around the area. Togekiss is beloved among Poké-fans because it is not only adorable but also extremely powerful. This gives players, who missed their opportunity to capture one in the Stoney Wilderness, another shot at a powerful Pokemon.

5 Isle of Armor

Isle of Armor was the first of 2 downloadable content (DLC) expansion packs released to supplement Pokemon Sword and Shield. It was first released on June 17, 2020. Many of the Pokemon not included in the base game were thankfully included in the Isle of Armor. Players can find Dedenne, Comfey, the Azumarill line, and the Jigglypuff line there.

Let’s take a closer look at the impressive list of Fairy-types that will be hanging around:

• Players can also find Slowpoke roaming around beaches on the Isle of Armor. And, if you use a Galarica Cuff, you can evolve it into another Galarian Exclusive, the uniquely typed, Galarian Slowbro.
• The mythical Pokémon, Magearna from Gen 7 can also be found there.
• Dedenne is not very good, to be blunt. While it does have the amazing type combination of Electric/Fairy, its stats are terrible and its movepool leaves a lot to be desired.
• Comfey is often overlooked, but it does have its uses. Pure Fairy is never a bad type to have, and its stats are surprisingly solid, with both of its defenses plus its Special Attack and Speed being really good, and it has an interesting ability called Triage, giving priority to moves with a healing effect.
• Azumarill is a very scary Pokemon. Water/Fairy is a great type combination, giving it few weaknesses (Poison, Grass, and Electric) and a lot of resistances. It has the ability Huge Power, doubling its attack stat to powerful levels, combining greatly with its high HP stat and decent defenses.
• Wigglytuff is close to being amazing. Normal/Fairy is a fantastic type combination, but its stats hold it back severely. Its HP stat is ridiculous, but the defenses are terrible so it kind of cancels that out, and while base 85 is not awful for a Special Attack stat, but with how slow it is you would expect something more. Competitive is a useful ability though, increasing your Special Attack every time a stat is lowered.
• Magearna definitely lives up to its mythical status with an amazing type combination of Steel/Fairy, excellent stats across the board, and a fantastic ability in Soul-Heart, boosting its Special Attack whenever a Pokemon faints.

4 Crown Tundra

Crown Tundra, the second DLC expansion packs was released on October 22, 2020. Many more of the Pokémon not included in the base game were added with the release of Crown Tundra. Some of these were Carbink, Xerneas, and Diancie.

• Xerneas is a beautifully designed Legendary Fairy-type that was introduced in Gen 6. It is a member of the Aura Trio (along with Yevetal and Zygarde) and is the game mascot for Pokemon X.
• Carbink isn’t all that noteworthy. Its defenses are amazing, but the rest of its stats are so lacking that they end up not mattering. Rock/Fairy is a great type combination *offensively* but Carbink is very much not an attacker. Clear Body is a good ability, but again, Carbink just kind of sits there, so it doesn’t really use it well.
• Xerneas is insane on so many levels. Pure Fairy in an excellent type, Fairy Aura gives it an inherent 33% power boost, it has incredible stats, and an absolutely busted move in Geomancy, doubling its Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed at the cost of only 2 turns.
• Diancie is a lot closer to the type of Pokemon Carbink should be. Amazing stats excluding HP and Speed, a great ability, and Clear Body, and it can actually use the amazing offensive potential that comes with Rock/Fairy due to possessing good attacking stats.

3 Ballimere Lake

This is the first of 3 areas located within Crown Tundra where you can find specific Fairy-types. Ballimere Lake is located in the deep South of Crown Tundra. Let’s face it, even if there were no Fairy-types around here, you would still want to go explore the lake just for the spectacular view! Luckily though, if players explore this area closely, they can find Mime Jr, Hatenna, and Hattrem here.

Mr. Mime is solid. Its Special Attack, Special Defense and Speed are very good, Filter and Technician are both great abilities, and it only comes with 3 weaknesses in Poison, Steel, and Ghost.

2 Lakeside Cave

The second area is Lakeside Cave, which is located just beside Ballimere Lake. Once there, if players decide to participate in a little cave exploration, they will find Mawile and Carbink. Don’t be fooled by Mawile’s appearance. This creature may be small, at 2 feet tall and 25 pounds, but it is also a Steel/Fairy-type, which is considered by many to be one of the strongest type combinations available in the Pokéverse.

Despite its excellent type combination, however, Mawile struggles to really do much. While the type combination is incredible, and both Sheer Force and Intimidate are great abilities, its stats are so awful that they completely undermine everything. Use this one with caution.

1 Giant’s Bed

Giant’s Bed is also located in Crown Tundra. Players can find it Southeast of Freezington past Frostpoint Field. It is well worth the trip, because Clefairy, Clefable, Hatenna, and Mime Jr. can all be found in this area. The headliner here is Clefairy which is considered by many to be the best of the Pure Fairy-types.

Clefable definitely has earned its title. Pure Fairy is a very strong type, Magic Guard is an amazing ability (the Pokemon with this ability cannot be damaged from indirect causes) and the stats are very good, with its HP, Special Attack, and Special Defense being solid. The thing that really makes Clefable stand out, however, is the combination of the Life Orb item and Magic Guard. Clefable will still get the power boost from the Life Orb, but not take any damage from it, making it quite the powerhouse.
