Pokémon The 10 Most Powerful Dark Moves Ranked

When Pokemon Gold and Silver released in 1999 as the first Generation II games, they introduced two new Pokemon types: Dark-type and Steel-type. These were introduced as a countermeasure against the previously overpowered Psychic-type. Since that time, Dark-type has remained one of the rarer types, and it was also the last type to get a Gym Leader. Plus, the base power of Dark-type attacks tends to be lower than other types.

But, the Dark-type should not be overlooked or underestimated. Most Dark-type moves have secondary abilities that make Dark-type Pokemon fearsome foes in the right trainer’s hands.

10 Night Daze

First introduced in Generation V as the signature move of Zorua and Zoroark, “Night Daze” sends a dark shock wave at the target. While the base attack power is 85, the move also has a 40% chance of lowering the target’s accuracy. When Generation VII was released, one of the new Legendary pokemon, Lunala, also gained this attack by leveling up.

While this move has a fairly good attack power and a considerable chance of lowering an opponent’s accuracy, the move itself has only has 95% accuracy. Although this number is still high and this attack works really well if it hits, it isn’t quite as reliable as some other Dark-type moves.

9 Hyperspace Fury

One of the new Dark-type moves introduced in Generation VI is “Hyperspace Fury.” This move appeared in Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire as the signature move of Hoopa’s alternate form “Hoopa Unbound.” For this attack, Hoopa uses its many arms to inflict a series of strong attacks on the target. The move always hits and ignores protective moves such as “Protect” and “King’s Shield.” Along with bypassing these moves, it also removes their effects for one turn, which can help with follow-up attacks.

With this move’s high base attack power of 100 and guaranteed hit chance, it can be a devastating move. However, this attack also lowers the user’s defense stat, which can be detrimental against tough opponents, and any trainers who want to use this move need to be wary of this.

8 Darkest Lariat

Pokémon The 10 Most Powerful Dark Moves Ranked

Originally the signature move of pokemon Incineroar in Generation VII, Darkest Lariat is a powerful Dark-type attack that is listed as TR93 in Generation VII. For this attack, the pokemon swings their arms and hits the target with a base attack power of 85. When this attack is used, the target Pokemon’s defense and evasion stat changes do not affect the attack’s damage, which can be extremely useful against pokemon or trainers who rely on raising those stats.

But, unlike “Hyperspace Fury,” this move is still affected by other protective moves and items. Plus, it only has a 100% accuracy, which means it still has the possibility of failing accuracy checks and missing. Despite that, one major upside is that the move does not inflict any negative side effects on the user.

7 Night Slash

As one of the attacks with the lowest base attack power on this list, it might seem strange that this somewhat underrated Generation IV Dark-type move is so well-regarded. But, even though this move only has a base attack power of 70, it has a higher chance to land a critical hit, which means it can possibly lead to even more damage compared to some of these other heavy-hitting Dark-type moves.

Also, this attack has a 100% accuracy, which means it has a higher chance to hit compared to “Night daze.” The chance of missing is still there, however, and a higher critical hit chance does not mean the Pokemon will land a critical hit. With all these unknown variables still in play, this move remains on the bottom half of the list despite its positives.

6 Crunch

Introduced along with the Dark-type in Generation II, “Crunch” is an iconic Dark-type move that is the upgraded version of “Bite” from Pokemon’s Generation I. If a pokemon uses this move, it crunches the target with its own sharp fangs, which has a base attack damage of 80.

In the earlier Generations, the attack also had a 20% chance to lower a target’s special defense stat. But, after Generation IV, the move now has a 20% chance to lower a target’s defense stat. With the move’s long history and relatively good stats, it’s definitely a great attack that a trainer can benefit from.

5 Feint Attack

“Feint Attack” is held back somewhat by its relatively low attack power of 60, but this attack is always guaranteed to land, making it extremely valuable in some situations. While spamming it won’t get trainers very far, it’s a dependable move that’s often key in securing a victory.

This Dark-type move was introduced in Generation II and used to be spelled “Faint Attack.” For this attack, the Pokemon disarms the opponent and strikes at them, which fits the cunning nature of the Dark-type pretty well.

4 Dark Pulse

Since Generation IV, “Dark Pulse” has become one of the standard Dark-type moves. Similar to “Crunch,” it has a base attack power of 80 and an accuracy of 100%. For this attack, the Pokemon sends a dark aura towards the target, which deals damage.

But, unlike “Crunch,” this move has the added bonus of having a 20% chance of causing the target to flinch. This is an even better side effect for the user than Crunch’s defense lowering, as the flinch status effect causes Pokemon to be unable to attack for a turn.

3 Fiery Wrath

Pokémon The 10 Most Powerful Dark Moves Ranked

“Fiery Wrath” is one of the newest Dark-type moves, having been introduced in Generation VIII. With its base attack power of 90 and 100% accuracy, it is one of the most powerful moves on this list. As the name suggests, the user becomes an aura of “fiery wrath” and attacks the opponent.

Since this move can also make the target flinch, this move is higher than “Dark Pulse” on the list. But, unlike “Dark Pulse,” it cannot be learned by a bunch of different Pokemon. Instead, it is the signature move of Galarian Moltres.

2 False Surrender

Pokémon The 10 Most Powerful Dark Moves Ranked

Similar to “Feint Attack,” it may at first seem strange that this Generation VIII move is so valuable, as it only has a base attack power of 80. Yet, “False Surrender,” the signature move of Morgrem and one of the signature moves of Grimmsnarl, will always hit.

Since it has a higher base attack power, it is essentially a better version of “Feint Attack.” Instead of disarming the opponent, the user pretends to surrender and then hits the opponent while their guard is down. The only downside to this move is that it cannot be learned by other Pokemon like “Feint Attack” can.

1 Wicked Blow

“Wicked Blow” does not have the highest base attack power, nor can it guarantee a hit, but it does have one irrefutable upside.

Although it only has a base attack power of 80 and a 100% accuracy, the “fierce blow” the user deals against the opponent always results in a critical hit. Similar to “Night Slash,” the critical hits mean that this move is way stronger than it first appears, and the absolute certainty of critical hits for this move makes it even more powerful. The only downside is that it can only be used by Single Strike Style Urshifu.
