When it comes to Pokémon, numbers matter — you need to pay attention to each Pokémon stat and every move category so you can prepare for battle.

One stat that’s unique in the original games is the Special stat. This one determines how much damage a Pokémon receives and does when using a special move. In later games, they decided to split the Special stat into Special Attack and Special Defense, so that Pokémon could have strong special moves, but they might also be susceptible to them. If you’re replaying the old games it’s vital that you remember which Pokémon could do the highest amount of damage when using their special moves.

10 Magneton – 120

Magneton is one of the original Electric-type Pokémon. In later games, it becomes an Electric and Steel-type, making Magneton the first Pokémon ever to change types with the progress of generations.

This Pokémon evolution is the result of three Magnemite being linked together by a strong magnetic force, making Magneton three times as powerful as just one single Magnemite. With 120 in its Special stat backing it up, this Pokémon’s power explains why it is the species that has been used the most by rival characters — three of them, to be precise: Wally, Blue, and Silver.

9 Tentacruel – 120

This Pokémon’s stats in the original series makes it an excellent addition to your team. With a base Speed stat of 100 and an even better 120 Special stat, this guy sure puts up a good fight. Tentacruel’s power comes from, you guessed it, its tentacles. It has 80 in total, and they come with the ability to grow or shrink.

Trainers have to keep an eye out for the red spheres in Tentacruel’s head. When they start glowing, it means that the Pokémon is ready to attack with ultrasonic waves. They are also capable of refracting light, storing energy, and they can use these spheres as a method of communication too.

8 Kadabra – 120

Even though this Psychic-type Pokémon hasn’t reached its final form, Kadabra can be a formidable adversary. With a 120 Special stat, this creature emits alpha waves so strong that they cause headaches. The strength of these waves is directly related to the danger this Pokémon faces.

Kadabra is the first of Abra’s evolutions to be seen with a silver spoon; this cutlery helps this Pokémon to amplify its telekinetic powers. Without them, Kadabra is only half as powerful.

7 Moltres – 125

Moltres is the first Legendary Pokémon on this list, and with a 125 Special stat, you can easily see why. This Pokémon’s damage-dealing move, Fire Blast, is one you have to look out for, mostly because it has a 30% burning chance.

One of Moltres’ strongest moves is Fire Spin. This special move traps the target, making it unable to attack. Moltres’ high Special stat only amplifies the effectiveness of this move.

6 Zapdos – 125

This Pokémon is the Electric-type of Kanto’s legendary birds trio, and just like the others, Zapdos has a powerful 125 Special stat. Players like to catch this one first, as out of all the Legendary Pokémon with fixed in-game locations, Zapdos is the only one you can catch with only two Badges.

This guy has complete control over electricity, being so powerful that it can cause thunderstorms by only flapping its wings. This Pokémon is rarely seen since you are only able to see it during a thunderstorm.

5 Articuno – 125

This Pokémon has the best of both worlds, a high 125 Special stat and one of the most powerful special moves in Gen I, Blizzard. However, nothing is perfect, as its 85 Speed stat leaves it defenseless against faster Pokémon like Toros.

This legendary Pokémon has the power to control ice at will. When Articuno flaps its wings the temperature starts dropping, and it starts to snow. Its preference for colder climates makes this creature fly from icy mountain to icy mountain, sometimes helping lost travelers by guiding them to safety.

4 Exeggutor – 125

This funny-looking Pokémon resembles a palm tree with three pineapples hanging at the top. Unlike Dugtrio, each of Exeggutor’s heads thinks differently from the other, which causes some conflict when each of the heads wants to do something entirely different, like walking in different directions.

Exeggutor is a Grass and Psychic-type Pokémon with a fantastic 125 Special stat. You can see this Pokémon display its powers when is time to fight. Because all three heads are a different being, their power is multiplied by three.

3 Gengar – 130

In the original games, many players preferred to have this Ghost-Poison type Pokémon on their team due to its high 110 Speed stat and its powerful 130 Special stat. Not only that, but Gengar is also immune to powerful moves of the time like “Explosion” and “Hyper Beam” throughout the original series.

Outside battles, this Pokémon enjoys frightening people by pretending to be a shadow or possessing other Pokémon.

2 Alakazam – 135

In the original games, this Pokémon is a fantastic addition to anyone’s team thanks to its high 135 Special stat and its 125 Speed stat. If this wasn’t enough, it has a useful move called Thunder Wave, which has a 100% accuracy and paralyzes the target. Second only to Mewtwo, Alakazam is almost the strongest Psychic-type out there.

In Generation I this worked well as nothing resisted Psychic-type besides other psychic types. This Pokémon has low Defense (45) and HP (55) stats as drawbacks, however.

1 Mewtwo – 154

Mewtwo creation had the sole purpose of designing the perfect Pokémon, and it shows. This Pokémon is smart, it’s the most powerful Psychic-type in Gen I, and it has incredibly high Special (154), Speed (130), Attack (110), and HP (106) stats.

Not only that but this Pokémon has access to two of the most powerful moves in the original games: Blizzard and Amnesia. All of these arguably makes Mewtwo the best Pokémon in Gen I.
