Pokémon Unite has burst onto the scene and players are quickly learning that there are certain ways to play the game more efficiently when aiming for total victory. While many of these techniques refer to the overall strategies of the game with regard to timings and lane distribution, there are also more specific ways to get the most out of each Pokémon.

Out of the five categories of Pokémon in Unite, Defenders are among the most appealing, as their protective bulk can also be utilized in attack or for support depending on the approach taken or held items selected.

10 Battle Crustle Is Certainly A Unique Way Of Using A Defender

The Stone Home Pokémon Crustle can be utilized in many different ways in Pokémon Unite. Although defending zones is the intended purpose of the bulky hermit crab, there’s a method that can improve its attack in the early game by quickly scoring several goals.

No matter the score being turned in, assuming Crustle has at least a high level Score Shield and Attack Weight, it can turn in these early points easily, gaining an additional attack boost per goal that lasts for the remainder of the match. It isn’t wise to use this every game, but when the opportunity presents itself, Crustle becomes a force to be reckoned with later on.

9 To State The Obvious, Defenders Need To Prioritize Keeping Attackers Away

It’s a rather obvious point to make, but a great way to stop an opposing team from scoring in any scoring-based game is to keep them away from the goal in question. The wonder of Defenders is their ability to absorb a barrage of attacks — unless completely swarmed by multiple enemies.

If a Defender can lead attacking foes away from the zone, it gives allies a chance to regroup and launch a counterattack that started with the Defender. Protecting the zone can also be an efficient way to play, but keeping opponents far away seems somewhat safer. Moves like Crustle’s Rock Tomb can put up a literal barrier to help with this.

8 Jungle Snorlax Is A Bizarre But Fun Way To Play With Boosted Speed

It isn’t necessarily recommended, but taking a tanky defender and patrolling the middle of the map like a Speedster can actually be a viable option with certain countermeasures in play, such as a Float Stone for boosted speed

The wild Pokémon in the jungle area are generally better for leveling up, and clearing them quickly will let players level up and grow stronger than teammates and opponents alike. But players shouldn’t even bother attempting this if the have no way to counter the slow movement of their Defenders, as it’lll take too long to travel around while they could be helping elsewhere.

7 Slowbro’s Stunning Can Hold Foes In Place For Allies To Finish Off

Slowbro has various moves that not only inflict damage but also other stat changes. However, one of the most frustrating moves to play against is Slowbro’s Telekinesis.

Telekinesis allows Slowbro to immobilize a targeted enemy and make them float momentarily. It’s a perfect move for holding an enemy still for a teammate to finish them off, or even to allow allies to escape by paralyzing an attacking foe. Telekinesis leaves Slowbro vulnerable to attacks from elsewhere, however, but it should be able to tank any damage while using the move.

6 Heavy Slam Can Make Snorlax A Lethal Attacker

Snorlax is often revered for its obvious defensive prowess and incredible vitality, but the move Heavy Slam can be a game changer. If it’s holding items that allow for increased speed and attack, this move that involves the Snorlax leaping up and jumping forward onto foes to temporarily stun them can become a powerful weapon.

Snorlax can be tough to play as, but with the right items countering its weaknesses and this powerful attack, the sleepy Normal-type can help to push the whole team forward or at the very least defend a zone on its own.

5 Block Is The Perfect Move For Stopping Or Switching The Flow Of Momentum

Snorlax’s ability to use the move Block can create horribly frustrating situations for its opponents. As the name suggests, Block puts up a barrier that can rarely be passed through, instead pushing other Pokémon back. This can be used to defend a zone, but also to shepherd enemies where the Snorlax player wants them to go.

This move can be applied on allies, allowing for a mob situation, or it could keeping enemies away from a scoring zone or important wild Pokémon, like Rotom, Drednaw, or Zapdos.

4 Keeping Allies Close As A Defender Benefits The Team As A Whole

As much as all the other types of players benefit from teaming up and sticking with a bulky Defender, those Defenders can also benefit from the company beyond just being used as a damage sponge.

A Supporter Pokémon sticking with a Defender can give it even more protective prowess or health, allowing the Defender to focus on what it does best. Additional attacking support from other Pokémon relieves the pressure on a bulky Pokémon to push forward alone, and generally a team of 2 or 3 built around a Defender should be enough to push through enemies and advance.

3 A Bulky Defender That Can Quickly Regain Health Is A Formidable Prospect

Defenders are already renowned for their strong defense and high vitality, but Defenders can add to their opponents’ misery even further by including held items like Leftovers or Shell Bell that regenerate health, or even items that increase their base HP.

Being a bulky Defender with several ways of healing on its own can help teammates rotate elsewhere and change the momentum of the contest, all while the Defender does its job and frustrates opponents with its everlasting bulk.

2 Staying Directly On A Zone To Defend Can Make Battles Chaotic

Defending on the zone is not only an additional way to heal, but it can also panic approaching opponents. Some will overextend and try to defeat the Defender, but others will retreat and allow the Defender to stand their ground.

This won’t work too well in a 3-on-1 situation without considerable help from items and the availability of a unite move, and it does keep the Defender’s role relatively static, but it can an optimal way to stop enemies from scoring, ultimately frustrating them with minimal firepower.

1 Negating A Defender’s Weaknesses With Items Make Them Unstoppable

This seems to be the case with most other Pokémon beyond Defenders, but the point of held items is to either boost its best attributes even further, or to try and negate any weaknesses. Defenders are generally slow with average offensive power, balanced with considerable bulk and defensive prowess. Therefore, the player’s focus should be on speed and attack when it comes to held items, with either a Float Stone or the consumable X Speed being a must-have.

There are countless combinations to be made with held items, with each one being specific to a certain Pokémon or the user’s playstyle. Either way, the potential is there to make the Defenders into absolute powerhouses.
