Pokemon Unite Roles Guide

Pokemon Unite launched for Nintendo Switch today and has fans all over the world enraptured with the weirdly wonderful mix of Pokemon and MOBA mechanics. However, not a lot of Pokemon fans will be particularly familiar with the latter, which are borrowed from incredibly complex games like League of Legends. One of the most most confusing aspects of a MOBA for new players will definitely be Pokemon Unite roles, which separate every Pokemon in Pokemon Unite into five distinct categories.

These categories are Defender, Attacker, Speedster, Support, and All-Rounder, which will probably sound a little odd for anyone who has only really engaged with Pokemon’s mainline games. Fortunately, they’re much easier to understand than you might think.

If you’re planning on diving into Pokemon Unite but are a little bit discouraged by all the MOBA lingo, don’t worry. We’ve put together a detailed Pokemon Unite roles guide that breaks down what each role entails and which Pokemon are the best at doing their job right now.

There are only 20 Pokemon in the game at the time of writing, so you can probably choose one or two roles to focus on and be totally fine. Here’s some information on all five roles in Pokemon Unite so you can decide which one sounds most like your preferred playstyle.

As you can probably guess from the name, Defenders… well, they defend, don’t they? In all seriousness, Defenders tend to have high Endurance and low Mobility stats. Their whole job is to serve as damage sponges while the rest of the team pull off eliminations and score goals.

If you’re a Defender, you’ll likely either stand guard at one of your team’s five zones or else take a bunch of hits for one of your team members so they can knock out an enemy – you’re basically like a Pokemon shield (as opposed to Sword – eh? eh?). At the moment, the Defenders available to unlock in Pokemon Unite are Slowbro, Crustle, and Snorlax. They’re all pretty good, but I like Slowbro the most because it has a great movepool and its abilities have annoying counter-support value.

Attackers, unlike Defenders, attack. These ‘mons tend to have either monstrous attack stats or are wicked fast – or, in some cases, are both of those things. Your job is to take out enemies so the rest of your team can push, but your squishiness means that you need to go about your duty with quite a bit of finesse.

The attackers in Pokemon Unite in the moment are Pikachu, Venusaur, Cinderace, Cramorant, Alolan Ninetales, and Greninja. I’ve only played a few of these, but judging from the ranked meta right now, Pikachu seems to regularly get the most eliminations. There are a lot of Venusaur and Cinderace floating about, sure, but Pikachu’s Unite move is ridiculous. Also, it doesn’t evolve into Raichu, because of course it doesn’t – this is Ash’s Pikachu for sure.

Pokemon Unite Roles Guide: What Does A Speedster Do And Who Is The Best?

Speedsters are like the Junglers of League of Legends. They play more of a solo game than other roles and flit between different lanes, regularly skulking through the no-man’s-land in the middle of the map in an attempt to exploit enemy weaknesses using their pace. Whether you’re in a pinch or somebody else is, being able to move faster than everyone else in the arena is your key advantage.

The Speedsters in Pokemon Unite right now are Zeraora, Talonflame, Gengar, and Absol. Gengar is surprisingly pretty bad, but the rest are great. Zeraora is currently pretty broken, so that’s probably your best bet if you’re starting out – if you’re wondering how to unlock it, here’s how to get Zeraora for free in Pokemon Unite.

Pokemon Unite doesn’t have a whole lot of supports yet, but essentially, your job in this role is to help your team as opposed to going up against the enemy one. Whether that means healing allies, putting up barriers to stop incoming damage, or putting your foes to sleep so you can either whale on them or make a sneaky escape, this is more of a cerebral position where you set up plays as opposed to being the one to get the final blow.

Wigglytuff, Eldegoss, and Mr. Mime are the current Supports in Pokemon Unite. They’re all pretty good, but I like having a good Eldegoss on my team the most.

Pokemon Unite Roles Guide: What Does An All-Rounder Do And Who Is The Best?

All-Rounders do all of the above, although it’s mostly a mix of Attacker and Defender. Sure, you’re almost as fast as a Speedster, and some of your abilities might be considered somewhat supportive, but your main job is to connect the independent roles of your offense and defense players.

The current All-Rounders in Pokemon Unite are Charizard, Lucario, Machamp and Garchomp. All of them are great – these are the characters I have the highest win percent with, which means if you’re like me, AKA someone who dabbles in a bit of everything, they could be up your street. I like Lucario the most because if you chain Extremespeed with Bone Rush properly you can get five massive hits in within the space of like, four seconds. It’s tough, but worthwhile.

There’s everything you need to know about Pokemon Unite roles. Remember, this only pertains to the 20 Pokemon in the game at launch. When it comes to more Pokemon being added, we’ll be sure to update this guide based on whether or not the meta changes. As it stands, though, these are the jobs you need to play and the Pokemon who fulfil them best as per the current patch. Pick a playstyle, pick a Pokemon, and hit ranked to become the MOBA legend you were always supposed to be.
