Quick Links

After being hinted at in previous events, Hoopa is now able to be captured in Pokemon GO. This mythical Pokemon originally appeared in Pokemon X and Pokemon Y, where it was distributed through special events. Being a rare Pokemon, players should do their best to try and catch Hoopa.

Hoopa normally has two different forms, but only one form is currently available in Pokemon GO. This form is Hoopa’s Confined form, where it is a dual Psychic and Ghost-type Pokemon. It is unknown at this time when Hoopa’s Unbound form will be implemented or if it will be involved with the recent special research tasks.

To encounter Hoopa in the first place, players need to start the newly added Misunderstood Mischief special research tasks. Unlike most special research tasks that lead to mythical Pokemon, Hoopa can actually be encountered early in the series. This makes it very easy for players to pursue.

Special Research Tasks

Pokemon GO How to Catch Hoopa

As previously mentioned, the newest special research task series in Pokemon GO is Misunderstood Mischief. Although there are a lot of tasks to complete the entire set of Misunderstood Mischief, players will only have to make it to step three in order to nab Hoopa (or at least the Confined version of it). Here’s a look at the tasks players will need to undergo if they want to get their hands on this crafty Pokemon:

Misunderstood Mischief Task #1

  • Use a single incense.
  • Snap three photos of wild Psychic-type Pokemon.
  • Perform 10 “Nice” throws.

Players that manage to get these tasks done will receive the following rewards:

  • 1000 EXP, 1000 Stardust, 10 Pinap Berries, 10 Pokeball, one incense, and an encounter with Gothita.

Misunderstood Mischief Task #2

Players just need to accept a reward for this task, which contains:

  • 720 EXP and 720 Stardust.

Misunderstood Mischief Task #3

  • Perform 5 “Curveball” throws.
  • Collect 10 different species of Pokemon.
  • Earn 5000 Stardust.

Players that work through these sub-tasks will be given the following rewards:

  • 1000 EXP, 1000 Stardust, 15 Pokeballs, 15 Great Balls, 3 Max Revives, and an encounter (and the chance to catch) a Confined Hoopa.

Using Confined Hoopa

Being a dual Psychic and Ghost-type Pokemon, Confined Hoopa is only weak to Ghost and Dark-type moves. It also resists damage from Poison, Psychic, Normal, and Fighting-type moves. There is no way to get Hoopa to change from its Confined form to its Unbound form and vice versa.

Confined Hoopa can only learn two different fast moves at this time. These moves are:

For charge moves, there also isn’t too much variety. Confined Hoopa’s charge moves at this time are:

With the very small movepool, the optimal moveset for Confined Hoopa really doesn’t have much variety. If players want their Hoopa to perform its best, Hoopa should know Confusion for its fast move and Shadow Ball for its charge move. These can all be easily taught via TMs, with none of the moves locked behind events.

Pokemon GO is available on Android and iOS.
