When it comes to the Power Rangers franchise, the best and brightest of the heroes gets debated quite a bit. Everyone has their favorite Ranger or their thoughts on the most capable teams. The same is true of the villains, though the villains who often end up discussed are those that lasted the longest in the franchise or have the most iconic arcs, like Rita Repulsa.

Amongst the most evil and powerful of Power Rangers villains are also some truly interesting characters that don’t get enough love from the fans. The underrated villains range from the sympathetic to the truly devious.

10 Ecliptor (In Space)

Ecliptor is lethal to his enemies, but he’s also a big softie when it comes to Astronema. That’s what makes him such a compelling villain during Power Rangers In Space.

It’s Ecliptor who raises Astronema for Dark Spectre, teaching her to fight and making her one of the most feared women in the universe. Ecliptor also has a rivalry with Darkonda that makes the dynamics amongst the villains just as interesting as the dynamics amongst the heroes. Even when Astronema begins to remember her life as Karone and wants to be good, Ecliptor is willing to stay by her side and protect her.

9 Master Org (Wild Force)

Though the character the audience first knows as Master Org isn’t entirely the original, he certainly makes for one dark character on Power Rangers Wild Force.

The villain, a former scientist who worked with the parents of the Red Ranger, allowed his jealousy to consume him as he took on a quest for power. He loved the future Red Ranger’s mother so much that it was really obsession and he couldn’t stand seeing her with someone else. It’s that classic motivation that leads him to become a villain and sets him on the path against the Power Rangers. Any audience is going to be familiar with the idea of jealousy as a motivator, but the scientist fully becoming Master Org in the end and being taken out by the Rangers is certainly satisfying.

8 Machine Empire (Zeo)

Power Rangers 10 Of The Most Underrated Villains In The Franchise

Power Rangers Zeo is one of the most beloved seasons of the Power Rangers franchise, but its villains don’t always make a huge mark on the audience since they’re sandwiched in between iconic baddies like Rita Repulsa and Divatox. The Machine Empire is made of literal machines, so for some of the audience, the human element was missed.

They are, however, responsible for one pretty fantastic idea – a gladiator-like match amongst monsters and heroes on a far away planet. In fact, they make Tommy Oliver think he’s someone else and almost get him to destroy his own teammates in the arena. The Empire comes this close to succeeding.

7 Scorpina (Mighty Morphin)

Power Rangers 10 Of The Most Underrated Villains In The Franchise

Criminally underused in the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series, Scorpina is one powerful foe. She’s a great fighter in her humanoid form, but she can transform into a giant monster with a venom-filled scorpion tail as well. If that wasn’t enough, she’s also incredibly sneaky.

Scorpina pretends to be a human with feelings for Power Ranger Adam Park, getting close enough to him that she almost steals his power coin. It’s a shame that she didn’t have anything to do with the series once Lord Zedd came to power. The Power Rangers comics from Boom Studios have given the character new life and utilized her in a way the show didn’t by exploring her loyalty to Rita Repulsa.

6 The A Squad (SPD)

The monsters of the week, and even the Emperor, make a big impression on the audience in Power Rangers SPD. It’s important to remember that this particular story, set in the future of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, wouldn’t take place at all if the B Squad Rangers didn’t get promoted.

The A Squad is initially presumed lost, but the truth is, this group of Power Rangers chooses to go to the dark side. It’s the first time in the show that the supposed heroes, and in this case, the best-trained ones, choose to be the bad guys instead. They don’t get a lot of screen time, but it’s a huge turn for the show, and a great one for the story.

5 Camille (Jungle Fury)

When the villain in a Power Rangers series is a little less cartoony and has a little more heart, it makes them more interesting for the audience to watch. Camille’s love for Jarrod makes her follow a villainous path, but it also leads to her turning over a new leaf by the end of the series.

Before she does, Camille has some pretty great fighting abilities that call on the spirit of the chameleon. It’s always a plus to see a villain do their own fighting instead of simply calling in their lackeys to do it, and Camille is never afraid to put herself out there.

4 Deviot (Lost Galaxy)

Power Rangers 10 Of The Most Underrated Villains In The Franchise

Deviot looks like a forgotten member of the Machine Empire, and he would have likely fit right in with that royal family, who always try to outdo one another. Deviot has a similar mentality. Though he works for Scorpius in Power Rangers Lost Galaxy, and then for his daughter Trakeena, Deviot has his own ambition. He isn’t content being anyone’s sidekick.

Not only does Deviot try to take on the Power Rangers on his own, but he also sabotages Scorpius in an attempt to get his power. He also schemes against Trakeena and almost succeeds in double-crossing her, but ends up fused with her instead, giving Trakeena all the power. His ambition gets the better of him, but it’s certainly fun to watch him try to take the villainous reins.

3 Frax (Time Force)

Power Rangers 10 Of The Most Underrated Villains In The Franchise

Originally a scientist in the future, Dr. Fericks was a kind man until he met Ransik. That’s because, though he tries to help prevent Ransik’s death, he’s repaid by the villain blowing up his lab with him it in. Dr. Fericks survives, to a degree, and becomes the cyborg known as Frax. That’s some intense backstory, even for a Power Rangers villain.

Frax ends up as Ransik’s second-in-command, but he nurses his hatred for his boss, trying to undermine him at every time. It’s a strange dynamic to watch unfold, and when Nadira reminds him of his humanity, it gives hope that villains can be redeemed. Though Frax doesn’t get that chance as the human elements of him are completely removed, Ransik and Nadira do.

2 Tenaya-7 (RPM)

Power Rangers 10 Of The Most Underrated Villains In The Franchise

For some Power Rangers fans, Tenaya is one of the best villains, but for others, she’s a retread of Astronema’s storyline as a young woman related to a Power Ranger who doesn’t know her own history. Tenaya’s story though puts a new spin on it as she’s infected with the Venjix virus. She also comes incredibly close to actually being a Power Ranger herself – while she’s still a villain.

Tenaya doesn’t get enough credit for being steps away from getting her hands on a morpher and fooling the entire Ranger team. In RPM, candidates for becoming a Ranger have to be compatible with the technology, so Tenaya auditions to be the Green Ranger. The existing team is impressed with her skills and immediately wants her on board. It’s only Ziggy’s suspicion that keeps her from ending the fight so early in the show.

1 Finster (Mighty Morphin)

In the three seasons of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd get all the credit for the evil-doing, but their minions do most of the actual work. Finster is the lynchpin in most of their plans. After all, he’s the one who actually creates the monsters!

Without Finster, Rita would have just head putties and Goldar to do the fighting. She also wouldn’t have been able to marry Lord Zedd without Finster’s help with a love potion. Finster is the true villain behind the original series and he doesn’t get enough credit for all the work he put in.
