Warning: contains major spoilers for Power Rangers #10!

The newest Power Ranger is like no other ranger that has come before. A confirmed image from social media shows a giant cat-like being suited up in full Power Ranger garb. This team of heroes is getting a four-legged friend to help them save the day.

The Power Rangers franchise began in 1993 and was created by Haim Saban. Since then there have been numerous seasons and variations of the television series, as well as numerous comics. The new Power Rangers comic has forced the Omega Rangers to break many rules as they face a new universal threat: the Empyreals. After the imprisonment of their previous Blue Omega Ranger, Kiya, a vacancy has since been left. However, it seems Kiya’s time as a ranger may have helped set up her own replacement – the giant alien feline named Yale.

The series, Power Rangers, from Boom! Studios is currently being written by Ryan Parrott with art from Francesco Mortarino and Raúl Angulo. In Power Rangers #10, Yale was seen entering the ancient temple of the Morphin Masters on Safehaven – with the implication that he would become the next Blue Omega Ranger. Now, a leaked image has been confirmed to be legitimate, showing what his full transformation will look like within this role. While the Power Rangers franchise has had a humanoid alien ranger, there has never been a non-humanoid ranger – until now. Yale is also currently incapable of standard speech, which is also different from previous rangers. Fans have received a first look at him via Ryan Parrott on Twitter:

Yale’s story extends back to Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers #30 from 2020, which is the issue he debuted in. Now, Power Rangers #10 has revealed his full origin and why he exemplifies the qualities needed to become a ranger. Initially, Yale was shown to be a destructive force due to a connection he had to the Morphing Grid. Now, he no longer has that connection and has been in the company of the Omega Rangers on their ship: the Spectrum II. For the past several issues he has been part of the team, assisting wherever he can on the rangers’ quest to stop the Empyreals – a galactic force that is destroying entire planets and wiping out populations.

The new image from Parrott not only confirms that Yale will become the Blue Omega Ranger, but it also reveals what his transformation will look like. It isn’t surprising that he would maintain his own body type like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles did, though it is a major departure from every ranger that has come before. While this visual confirms that he will not be made humanoid in this role, it also raises a few questions about how he will perform his role by other Power Rangers’ standards.

One of the staples of the Power Rangers franchise is the presence of Zords – giant robot mechs that the rangers pilot and can combine into a Megazord. However, these mechs are operated by hand-operated controls, which aren’t an appendage that Yale has at his disposal. This begs the questions of if Yale will even have a Zord or if a new form of Zord will be seen that allows him to control it another way. Yale is a rather large cat, so a Zord potentially might not be needed as quickly for him as a humanoid ranger. Yet he isn’t Zord size and the strength of the Power Rangers reaches its height when their efforts are combined. This is new territory, but fans certainly have a lot to look forward to with the new Blue Omega Ranger.
