The PlayStation 5 won’t be backwards compatible with PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 games, according to Ubisoft.

As we head into yet another generational console war, backwards compatibility is proving to be a key battleground between Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Sony’s PlayStation 5. While Microsoft has proudly touted its tradition of ensuring that the best games continue forward from each previous Xbox generation, Sony’s messaging surrounding the PlayStation 5 and backwards compatibility has been somewhat murkier.

Last March, Sony said that “most” PS4 games would be playable on the PlayStation 5, and later clarified that this meant 100 of the most popular PS4 titles would be playtested to ensure they run properly on the PS5. As for the rest of the PS4’s library, PlayStation Blog wrote: “We believe the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 titles will be playable on PS5.”

But what about the earlier PlayStation consoles? What about classic games from the PlayStation 1, 2, and 3? Well, those games are being left behind, according to Ubisoft.

Spotted by Twitter user Wario64 is this recent update to Ubisoft’s PlayStation 5 support page. It describes the upgrade process from the PlayStation 4 to the PlayStation 5 and that there is crossplay between the two platforms, but backwards compatibility “will not be possible for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, or PlayStation games.”

This doesn’t necessarily mean that every single PS3, PS2, and PS1 game will never be able to experience the joy of running on the PS5’s next-gen hardware, but you’ll have to wait for specific remasters to appear on the PlayStation Store, and there’s no telling when or even if those remasters will ever come.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is thumbing its nose at Sony with “thousands” of games available at launch and over 100,000 hours of playtesting for backwards compatible games from the original Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Taking a similar approach with the launch of the Xbox One, popular games and cult classics from throughout Xbox history get lovingly retouched for use on the next generation of Xbox.
