The Chinese Government has reportedly been on a game banning spree with Fortnite, PUBG, and H1Z1 apparently no longer available in the country.

It wasn’t too long ago that we lived in a world where certain movies, games, and even music videos were banned by governments. That doesn’t happen anywhere near as often nowadays. Creators, directors, and developers really have to go that extra mile to make something so offensive that officials deem it too horrific for us to lay eyes on. Plus, thanks to the internet, we’ll still get our hands on it somehow.

Although the banning of video games is pretty much non-existent in the present day Western world, that doesn’t seem to be the case elsewhere. There are currently reports that a number of games have been banned in China. According to PCGamesN, the country’s government has established an Online Ethics Review Committee to determine whether games break their social and ethical rules.

A thread on Reddit, which cites Chinese gaming forum NGA as its source, claims that of the first 20 games reviewed by the committee, eleven have been ordered to take corrective action and nine have been banned entirely. Some of the titles reportedly banned and ordered to make changes are not that popular outside of Asia, but others that have made the list are worldwide names.

At the top of the list of games that have supposedly been banned are PUBG and the immensely popular Fortnite. What’s puzzling is the reasoning behind Fortnite’s apparent ban – that it features too much “blood and gore.” Fortnite is famous for its cartoonish style and features pretty much no blood and gore whatsoever. When a player is hit, numbers emanate from them, not blood, and when they are eliminated they simply disappear.

There are also some big titles on the list of games allegedly ordered to take “corrective action.” League Of Legends, Overwatch, and World Of Warcraft are all on there. One of the main criticisms from the committee is the games’ “inharmonious chatrooms.” We can see where they might be coming from on that one. China is a big market for any game, so if all the above is true, developers will not be happy about it.

Josh has been gaming for as long as he can remember. That love began with a mild childhood addiction to the Sega Genesis, or Mega Drive since he lives in the UK. Back then, Sonic 2 quickly became his favorite game and as you might have guessed from his picture, the franchise has remained close to his heart ever since. Nowadays, he splits his time between his PS4 and his Switch and spends far too much time playing Fortnite.
