While many players are excited to see Banjo-Kazooie arrive soon in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, players should also check out the other games that developer Rare has to offer. Now is the perfect time to check them out, as the Rare Replay collection is on sale, giving players 30 Rare games for $30, or it can be accessed with the Xbox Game Pass for the Xbox One.

While Rare has worked on some recent games, from 2009 to 2014 they focused heavily on the Kinect for the Xbox, which is why some players may feel like they have no heard from them in a while if they are not users of the hardware. Here are some of the best games you should be playing right now!

Rare Replay: Sea of Thieves

Released in 2018, Sea of Thieves grants players control of their very own pirate ship that they alone, or with up to a crew of four players, can sail the seas of a fantastic world. While critics were critical about this game upon release for not having as much content as expected, we are now a year passed that point and there is plenty to do.

Players actively work on quests with the goal of collecting loot and engaging in player-vs-player combat. Loot gold and treasure to purchase re-skinned weapons and improving the look of your ship towards the goal of becoming a pirate legend. As these items are purely cosmetic, the game always feels fair against other players, and still rewards the time you put into each goal.

Sea of Thieves now has two expansions as well, and boasts cross-play between PC and Xbox One consoles, so it is easy to get in on this one with friends.

Rare Replay: Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise

Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise is an interesting simulation game where players tend to a garden and the various piñata creatures that come by. This is the sequel to Viva Piñata, which is also included in the Rare Replay listing. For the most part, it is safe to say that this is the one to play. It released in 2008, two years after the first game, but because it offers quality of life improvements, while reusing many assets, it feels more like a great DLC pack than a proper sequel.

Rare Replay: Jetpac Refueled

If you enjoy fast-paced shooters, this one is for you. The game combines modern elements in the series but is also a remake of the 1983 ZX Spectrum game, Jetpac, so it feels as though it takes on the best elements of old and new games. There are over 128 levels in overhauled HD graphics, so players of the original games will recognize most of the stages. There are also competitive modes, leaderboards, and achievements, and with the game coming to Xbox Game Pass, there are sure to be more players competing for a top spot again.

Much like the original games, players take control of Jetman and are then placed in a horizontal wrap around the level with six platforms to move onto. You must locate the pieces of your rocket that spawn around the map, and then fill it with six fuel containers before moving onto the next planet, all while fighting off a horde of aliens using only a single laser gun. If retro games are more to your liking, the original Jetpac is also included in the Rare Replay.

Rare Replay: Perfect Dark Zero

Released in 2005 as a launch title for the Xbox 360, Perfect Dark Zero is a well-made exclusive that kicked off the console in style. Following the original Perfect Dark game, players continue with Joanna Dark, a dangerous bounty hunter working for her father.

One of the more enjoyable elements was the co-op missions that could be done, which were 14 missions that made up the campaign node of the game. There were also great deathmatch fights of up to 32 players at once. This is the second time that the game is included in a Rare Replay title, so be sure to check it out if you haven’t.

Rare Replay: Battletoads Arcade and Battletoads

Older players will be familiar with the original brilliance of the Battletoads game for consoles, but the Arcade variant is an interesting story. Commercially, it was considered to be a failure, perhaps because it was compared to Turtles in Time and The Simpsons Arcade Game, two of the most iconic beat-em-ups in history.

Both games offer simple, over-the-top fighting and great animations that send enemies flying into the camera. If you have not played these, they should be at the top of your list to play with a friend.

Rare Replay: Conker’s Bad Fur Day

Conker’s Bad Fur Day is one of the few titles that deserve to be termed as “Underrated” or “a hidden gem,” which we normally hate using because they are terms thrown around on Reddit by every Karma-desperate user looking for upvotes.

The game has great writing that was intended for a more mature audience, similar to Banjo-Kazooie, but with a heavy-drinking red squirrel who wants to get home to his girlfriend. Although it was well-received by players and critics alike, it sold well below expectations because of limited advertising and the unfortunate timing of launching near the end of the Nintendo 64’s life cycle. People knew there were exciting new consoles right around the corner, and few were interested in anything Nintendo had to offer at that time.

If the game had been released a year before, or perhaps held back for development on the Game Cube, it likely would have been a complete smash hit. Check it out!

Honorable Mention: Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts

Yes, we said this would be covering games besides Bano-Kazooie, but this is a great one in the series. While it might be different from the previous installments, it is still a great one to check out.
