Alan Ritchson brings Lee Child’s hero to life in the first Reacher trailer for Amazon. Child has written 26 books featuring his main protagonist, Jack Reacher, a former military police officer who roams the U.S. taking on odd jobs that utilize his unique talents for solving problems within dangerous situations. Known for his 6 ft. 5 in. stature, muscular build, blondish hair, and philosophical nature, Jack Reacher lives a nomadic lifestyle with no strings or ties to any one location for very long.

The character was most recently embodied by Tom Cruise, who played Jack Reacher in two film adaptations of the books. The first movie, Jack Reacher, was directed by Christopher McQuarrie and based on Child’s book One Shot and co-starred Rosamund Pike and Jai Courtney. The second film, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, was an adaptation of Child’s novel Never Go Back and once again starred Cruise, along with Cobie Smulders and Aldis Hodge. Cruise was often criticized by fans of the books as being far too short and small in stature to embody the character but pulled it off nonetheless to varying degrees. Plans for a third venture fell through as Child opted to reboot the franchise for streaming and find an actor more befitting of the character’s description.

Now, Amazon has released the first trailer for the Reacher series, which has Alan Ritchson filling Cruise’s boots and bringing Child’s hero to life in a new iteration. Reacher will adapt the first Jack Reacher novel, 1997’s Killing Floor, which finds Reacher fresh out of the military and beginning his nomadic lifestyle, only to find himself charged with murder in a small Georgia town. Co-stars Willa Fitzgerald as Roscoe Conklin and Malcolm Goodwin as Chief Detective Oscar Finlay are featured in the trailer, which leans into Reacher’s size and stature far more than the Cruise films did. Take a look below:

Ritchson has made a name for himself over the years in a number of projects that suit his skill set and presence as an actor. He played Aquaman in Smallville and had a recurring role on Blue Mountain State as Thad Castle. He played the character Gloss in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and even did mo-cap work as Raphael in the reboot and sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. His most recent work was as Hank Hall/Hawk in DC’s Titans series.

With Cruise leaning heavily into the Mission: Impossible franchise in a role that fits him far better than Jack Reacher, it feels like this new direction for the character is the best approach. Fans of the books have been vocal about their lack of faith with Cruise embodying the role and Ritchson looks like he’s torn straight from the page. Whether or not non-fans buy into the show is another matter, but Ritchson and the showrunners (Prison Break’s Nick Santora) will have eight episodes to convince them when Reacher kicks off February 4th on Amazon Prime.
