Preventing spoiler leaks for Spider-Man: No Way Home has been difficult, producer Amy Pascal says. As the premiere of the upcoming blockbuster nears, fans’ excitement has also been steadily increasing, especially thanks to the release of new marketing materials. Spider-Man: No Way Home is scheduled to hit theaters worldwide on December 17.

The promotional efforts for Spider-Man: No Way Home started fairly late. After its official title was confirmed back in February 2021, it wasn’t until late August that its first trailer was released. About two months later, the second one was dropped, and since then, a string of posters and shorter TV spots have been rolled out. While Marvel Studios and Sony have been running a restrained marketing campaign for the trilogy-capper, fans have been occupied with various reports and supposed leaks from the movie.

Now, Pascal is opening up about them and how it was difficult to preserve the secrecy of the blockbuster before it hits theaters. Speaking with Fandango in celebration of the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home’s tickets, Pascal was asked how they are able to keep the movie’s biggest surprises under the lid. Without giving away anything, she admits that it has been a struggle, because they want viewers to experience the movie’s highlights in theaters. She also points out how they never confirm any rumor, which is also for the same reason. Read her full answer below:

Boy, you could probably answer that question. You know. Yes, we’ve been… we don’t want to spoil things for people, you know? That’s one of the problems with movies is that people know everything before they walk into the theater. So we’ve been trying to make sure people get the full theatrical experience when they go to the movie. And yeah, you try to never confirm anything in any movie, but this one is a big one.

Aside from reports and rumors, Spider-Man: No Way Home has also been plagued with several purported leaks. There have been images of Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire, and even Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock floating around the internet — most of them, however, are unverifiable, as they’re typically shared online using fake accounts. It’s also worth noting that advanced photo and video editing technology make it easier for trolls who just want to wreak havoc on the fandom. As Pascal said, they opt not to confirm anything so that fans can have the full theatrical experience the first time they watch the movie. But this doesn’t mean that everything that’s Spider-Man-related hearsay online is real. It’s just easier not to comment on these matters.

Luckily, with just three weeks to go before Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters, fans won’t have to wait that long to find out which rumors are true and which ones are false. The press tour for the blockbuster has already begun, with the cast, led by Tom Holland, coming out to promote the movie. It’s uncertain if a third trailer is still in the cards, but it’s more than likely that Marvel Studios and Sony will be rolling out TV spots instead, just to keep the public hyped up.
