Reasons Why A Snapchat Account Might Be Locked & How To Unlock Again

There are several reasons why a Snapchat account might be locked — that is, why a user might be unable to use the app. This is often down to Snapchat detecting activity on the account that it prohibits, including sending spam or spreading false information. Fortunately, there are often simple solutions that allow someone to rectify the situation and get their account unlocked again.

Snapchat is a multimedia messaging app, which means users can interact with each other in different ways, including a chat feature, along with sending each other pictures and videos. Once they enable their camera, people have the opportunity to use either the front or rear camera to make creative content using various filters. It was also recently revealed that Snapchat may even allow people to share Snaps and Stories outside of the app. While using the app can some times get a little complicated, like when changing a username, for the most part, the app offers an intuitive and easy experience.

When someone discovers their account is locked, it can be a frustrating experience. However, Snapchat offers several reasons as to why this might be happening, each with its own solution. One reason is the user might be utilizing a third-party app while using Snapchat. A third-party app is an application intended to be used with another app, but was not actually authorized by the original app. While some third-party apps are recognized by Snapchat, there are others like Sneakboo or SnapTool, which aren’t — and using one of these apps could result in the account being locked. This is due to third-party apps accessing the user’s login information without using a secure connection, thereby putting the account, as well friends’ accounts, at risk. If the account is locked because of a third-party app, uninstalling the app and waiting twenty-four hours before attempting to log in again should fix the issue.

How To Unlock A Snapchat Account

Another reason someone might be locked out of their Snapchat account is because they’ve been sending spam — in other words, sending out multiple Snaps and Stories one after the other, without any indication that the recipient actually wants them — or other abusive behavior. Abusive behavior includes impersonating someone else or bullying another user. At this point, Snapchat advises waiting for several hours before trying to log in again. Alternatively, they can visit accounts.snapchat.com/accounts/unlock, and click the yellow Unlocked button. Snapchat also issues a warning that if the spamming persists, the user might have their account permanently locked.

An account also might get locked if someone has added too many friends before they have verified their account. They can do this by verifying their email or phone number — for email, tap the gear icon located at the top of the Profile screen, then tap the email address found in Settings. A verification email will be sent to that address. Alternatively, they can tap on their phone number, also found in Settings, and a verification code will be sent via text message. Finally, Snapchat may also lock an account when it has detected a security risk. In this case, all someone has to do is contact the Snapchat Support Team, and they’ll be put in contact with someone who can help.
