When Red Dead Redemption 2 was released back in October of 2018, it quickly outsold the original within months. Today, about a year and a half since we were all introduced to Arthur Morgan for the first time, Red Dead 2 has nearly doubled the sales of the original, further proving that the Rockstar title was well worth its production budget.

The first Red Dead Redemption’s sales were last reported in 2017, at which point the game had sold an impressive 15 million copies since its 2010 release. Now that Red Dead 2 has been reinvigorated thanks to a release on PC, Rockstar announced that the game recently surpassed over 29 million copies sold.

Based on that progress, there’s no reason to believe why Red Dead 2 won’t more than double the sales of the original game by the end of the year. Given the its breathtaking story, exciting gameplay, and insane realism that has all been built upon by a growing online multiplayer platform, there’s no reason to doubt that people are going to keep buying it.

Although Red Dead Redemption 2 has done exceptionally well, it still pales in comparison to the mound of money that Rockstar has made from their crown jewel, Grand Theft Auto V. GTA V has sold 120 million copies worldwide since first hitting shelves in 2013, and is reportedly the best selling piece of entertainment ever created.

Despite all of this great news, Rockstar hasn’t exactly been trending positively in the news as of late. Co-founder Dan Houser infamously stated that Rockstar employees had worked 100 hour weeks leading up to Red Dead Redemption 2’s release, which created a larger conversation about people in the gaming industry being overworked.

Not only that, but Houser just recently left Rockstar all together. The move surprised many, considering that Houser had founded the company and had been with Rockstar since the late 1990s. It’s entirely possible that those insanely long working weeks in 2018 could have led to his decision to retire.

Either way, Red Dead Redemption 2 is an excellent game, and is more than deserving of the success it has seen. While fans eagerly await news on Grand Theft Auto VI, Rockstar continues to work on its online platforms, Red Dead Online and GTA Online. As for what the future may hold for the company, your guess is as good as ours.
