Warning: Spoilers for Nightwing 2021 Annual!

The second Robin turned Red Hood, Jason Todd, has always been a bit rough around the edges, and now in DC Comics, it’s revealed that he had a super appropriate and amusing way to keep his rebellious phase going while not in his Robin costume. Playing the overly violent carjacking sim that is Grand Theft Auto III isn’t anything special on its own, but when linked back to Jason’s past, it becomes much more so, just in the laugh-out-loud kind of way.

As revealed in Nightwing 2021 Annual, by Tom Taylor, Cian Tormey, and Daniel HDR, this funny moment comes about during a mid-issue flashback when Dick Grayson aka Nightwing gets a call from the still alive Alfred. Telling Dick that he needs him to return home to Wayne Manor, Alfred convinces Nightwing to come back only because Batman is away for a few days, as this particular reverie takes place soon after Bruce and Dick’s bitter superhero split.

Arriving at the mansion, Alfred brings Dick to the new Robin’s bedroom where it’s revealed that Alfred has tricked Dick into a bonding session with Jason, slamming the door closed as he exits the room and forcing the two into a rare interaction. Saying he’s been grounded by The Dark Knight for not meeting “certain standards,” this issue goes on to show a budding relationship between Robin and Nightwing, but it’s what Jason’s doing when Dick arrives in his room that stands out as being a moment worth remembering.

Sitting on the floor with a gaming controller in his hands, Jason is shown playing a familiar video game that’s all about committing crimes and getting away with it. Partially cut off at the edge of the page but unmistakable when really looked at, the game Jason plays is none other than the iconic, industry-changing, open-world game that is Grand Theft Auto III. Looking to be in a scuffle with a few police cars and even a circling helicopter as his Claude avatar readies for a firefight, the reason this little character moment is so funny stems from Jason’s very first appearance as a character where he was caught committing a criminal act that would’ve made even the baddest of bad guys in Liberty City proud.

Infamously found by Batman as he attempted to steal the tires off the Batmobile (while it was parked in Crime Alley no less), Jason spending his time grounded in his room playing a game that’s synonymous with stealing cars and generally doing the wrong thing is probably one of the most hilarious ways of rebelling against Batman, the guy who’s dedicated his life to avoid any and all Grand Theft Auto-like scenarios in the real world. Furthermore, Jason deciding to fire up a game where you play as the ultimate criminal who can beat people down with abandon really leans into the idea that even if he wasn’t able to do the same thing to thugs out on the street at the time, he’d sure as hell do it inside the game world instead.

So while this gaming session might not allow Jason to recreate the exact type of theft that first drew Batman’s attention to him, it stands to reason he probably tried to, which makes his choice in what to play while grounded even more hilarious than most. Red Hood playing Grand Theft Auto III as a kid is kind of a perfect moment for the character, but what fans really want to know now is whether Jason was able to clear that wanted level rating before he was tossed in jail or better yet, turned into one of those hilarious “Wasted” memes.
