Warning! Spoilers ahead for Detective Comics #1042!

As the black sheep of the Bat-Family, Red Hood has embraced methods and tools abhorrent to his mentor and allies. After reconciling his differences with Batman, Red Hood has vowed to cease his use of his iconic firearms in favor of tools more aligned with the Bat-Family’s methods. Red Hood has finally revealed his new arsenal that nominally follows his adoptive family’s code, while remaining useful to his brand of bloody justice.

In Detective Comics #1042’s backup story Deb Donovan in: What the #!$% is Task Force Z? Part 2 by Matthew Rosenberg and Max Raynor, readers see Gotham reporter Deb Donovan and Red Hood begin to pull at the threads of Task Force Z. As Astrid Arkham, the Arkham Knight, has been removed from the morgue, Red Hood suspects something is up, and tasks Deb Donovan to investigate using her journalistic prowess. As the pair closes in on a lead, they witness a gang of masked assailants begin to violently steal a corpse from the morgue, and Red Hood chooses to engage showing off some of his latest toys.

Red Hood’s arsenal has famously included all manner of guns, explosives, and knives. Jason Todd’s desire to enact his own version of lethal justice on wrongdoers often put him at odds with his mentor and adoptive family, and the tools of his trade represented his animosity and opposing viewpoint. Following Jason’s gradual reconciliation with the family, however, he has gradually built back those connections he once forswore. After the traumatic events of Batman: Urban Legends, Jason has grown closer to Batman, and while he hasn’t completely sworn off killing yet, he has agreed to cast firearms aside, representing his continued growth and growing connection back to the Bat-family. In Detective Comics #1042, Red Hood no longer uses firearms, instead returning to his use of a crowbar as his primary melee weapon. In his holsters where his pistols once resided, Jason now has two large, custom batarangs, which seem to serve as both ranged weapons and knives all while looking downright menacing.

Later, when Task Force Z forms and he takes the reins, he appears to upgrade his arsenal with a studded electric baton. This choice of weapons, and how he carries them show that Jason Todd is more confident than ever regarding his way to fight crime and that he holds a unique place in the Bat-Family. However, these weapons could still kill a foe if he chose to utilize them that way. Red Hood has made peace with the Bat-Family and its creed, but he’ll still kill if he feels that it’s warranted.

Red Hood has gotten rid of his once iconic guns following his growing reconciliation with Batman and the Bat-Family. While guns are now out of the question, his new weapons are just as brutal and show that going forward, Jason Todd is still his own man, even though he has managed to overcome some of his inner strife and build a better connection to his adoptive family. That said, Red Hood’s new crowbar, custom batarangs, and electric baton are more than capable of putting most criminals six feet under for good.
