Relic Teases Age Of Empires 4 News For X019

Microsoft is set to host its X019 event this week and it looks to have a doozy of an announcement. Confirmed to be in development ages ago, Relic Entertainment has been pretty quiet about Age of Empires 4. With the release of Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition practically coinciding with X019, a recent teaser on the game’s official website has sent fans into a frenzy.

After hosting a series of AR games, the latest teaser (called “Have you seen Elric?”) ended in a message from an elusive man named Elric. Bearing the title “The end of an Era. The beginning of an Age,” the name is clearly an anagram for Relic, the developer behind 4. It appears like Microsoft is set to reveal some new information about the long-anticipated sequel to its beloved RTS franchise. Furthering that notion is a timer at the bottom of the page, counting down in seconds that amounts to roughly three days.

While Age of Empires 4 is unlikely to get a shadow-drop this weekend, there’s a very real chance we’ll be getting a release date or some extensive gameplay footage. Developer Forgotten Empires (the studio behind the recent Definitive Editions) has stated that Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition will land before 4, but obviously Relic has been working tirelessly on perfecting its vision of the franchise. There’s bound to be something to show off.

Microsoft’s return to the Age of Empires series last year was met with a ton of enthusiasm from fans. While an HD port of Age of Empires 2 has existed for a while now, Microsoft had seemingly given up creating new installments in the franchise. The surprise of Age of Empires 4 being real in 2017 was a joy, not to mention the subsequent reveal of the prior installments getting new, 4K enabled ports.

Time hasn’t necessarily been kind to the original game, but Age of Empires is a blast from the past that hearkens back to a simpler time in the RTS genre. Forgoing hero classes and complicated battle systems, it’s just simply fun to look back and see what was. It doesn’t hurt that the series always had an odd sense of humor, something that has been carried across to the re-leases.

Whether or not this teaser actually is pointing to Age of Empires 4, Microsoft definitely has something in store for X019. Make sure to check it out on November 14, 2019.
