There have been a lot of follow-up games to the original Wipeout, and in September 2020, that will be another. Sort of.

There have been a few cases in recent years of studios giving players a glimpse of a game that looks like it might be pretty great, only for the game to then disappear off the face of the Earth. It happened with Final Fantasy VII Remake, and also Marvel’s Avengers. The good news? We now have the former, and will also have the latter within the next few weeks.

While not on the same level as those two behemoths, racing game fans were also excited about the release of Pacer. Pacer hit early access on Steam all the way back in 2015 but was called Formula Fusion at the time. It then disappeared, only to reappear again a little while later and be given a 2019 release date. It then vanished for a second time without much of an explanation.

Now for some good news. Pacer has not disappeared for good. In fact, developer Psygnosis has revealed that it will be released on Steam, PS4, and Xbox One on September 17, 2020. For those who think Pacer looks familiar (check out the trailer above) there’s a reason for that. While not officially a part of the Wipeout series, it is effectively a sequel to the F-Zero style racer.

Wipeout was a launch title on the PS1 and has had a number of sequels over the years. Although this isn’t an official sequel, Pacer has been created by the same studio, and the team behind it even includes some of the same people who worked on the very first games in the series. As for what this new anti-gravity racer will include, that side of things looks pretty exciting too.

The game will feature 14 different tracks and five completely customizable vehicles. It will also feature music from CoLD SToRAGE, just like the original game in 1995. There will also be an online element to the game that will allow players to compete against others all over the world. A different type of racer, and a welcome return to the Wipeout franchise, even if it is an unofficial one.
