Resident Evil Village Can Ethan Winters Actually Be Killed

Resident Evil 7 hero Ethan Winters returns as the main protagonist of Resident Evil Village, and while he is a more mature and interesting character for his second game appearance, he also seems to have slurped down an invincibility potion in between games. Ethan takes a serious amount of damage over the course of Resident Evil Village. From having his hand bitten half off to being stabbed in the chest with axes, Ethan is not an easy man to kill. And all that happens just in the game’s first few hours.

[WARNING: Spoilers For Resident Evil Village below]

So, can Ethan actually be killed? One would think this would be an obvious question, but certain plot points towards the end of Resident Evil Village make things way more complicated. There’s more to Ethan and his absurd ability to shrug off living ending wounds than meets the eye, and it’s for that reason it’s unclear if Ethan can actually be killed by normal means.

It all makes for some pretty confusing stuff, but that’s pretty par for the course for Resident Evil lore. From being brutally maimed to possibly surviving massive explosions, here’s a look at the evidence on whether or not Ethan Winters can, in fact, die in Resident Evil Village.

Does Ethan Winters Die In Resident Evil Village?

As revealed in the game’s final hours, Ethan actually has already died once – at the beginning of Resident Evil 7. But after being murdered by the Baker family, Ethan is also infected with the mold that has spread throughout their home, effectively bringing Ethan back to life and giving him some powerful regenerative powers.

It’s those powers which allow Ethan to survive all kinds of brutal injuries which would kill any normal person. For example, in Lady Dimitrescu’s castle, Ethan’s hand is sliced off, only for Ethan to essentially glue it back on a few minutes later as if nothing happened. It’s also what allows Ethan to survive having Mother Miranda literally rip out his heart at the end of the game. Ethan would appear to be invincible then, right?

Of course, players can die over the course of Resident Evil Village should they be killed by an enemy and happen to run out of first-aid medicine. These deaths can include anything from being swallowed by RE8’s terrifying giant baby monster to being mauled to death by a giant werewolf. But because these deaths don’t happen as part of the story, it can be assumed that Ethan actually would survive these encounters, if not for gameplay purposes.

Ethan’s actual, seemingly final death comes at the very end of the game, when he chooses to stay behind to activate a bomb attached to the Megamycete, the source of the mold virus which has infected so many over the course of Resident Evil 7 and Village, including himself. After defeating Mother Miranda, Ethan’s powers appear to be waning, with his hands starting to turn white and crumble like so many of the bosses he’s defeated over the course of the game. Ethan activating the bomb would seem to be him acknowledging he doesn’t have long to live anyways, and wanting to make sure his daughter, Rose, is safe.

That would appear to be Ethan’s definitive end, but information revealed by modders who have unlocked the game’s camera during Resident Evil Village’s final epilogue throws a wrench in that assumption. At the end of the game, as a now teenage Rose drives off in a black SUV, a lone figure can be seen walking up to Rose’s car. That figure, who’s identity can’t be made out from a distance, has been revealed to be none other than RE8’s Ethan Winters. What this means for the future of Resident Evil, however, is unclear.

It could certainly mean Ethan survived the explosion he found himself in when destroying the Megamycete. The Megamycete is said to store the memories and DNA of those it infects, which means Ethan would also have been brought back to life somehow. Or Ethan’s final, hidden appearance is simply Capcom needing a character model to use in the game’s final scene, and presumed fans wouldn’t be able to get a close look at which character model was actually being used.

In the end, the answer to whether or not Ethan Winters can die in Resident Evil Village is murky. Ethan, though he can take an insane amount of punishment, does seem able to die, especially if his mold-induced regenerative powers have faded. But at to whether or not he is actually dead, players might just have to wait until Resident Evil 9 to find out.
