Candiace Dillard is finally opening up about why her mother, Dorothy, dislikes her husband Chris Bassett so much on The Real Housewives of Potomac. It’s no secret how much Dorothy enjoys bad-mouthing her son-in-law despite him being married to her daughter and making Candiace happy. For a while now, fans have wondered which reasons Chris has given Mama Dorothy to dislike him for her daughter. Now that Chris is working as Candiace’s manager, Dorothy is once again being critical of him.
Despite how in love Candiace is with her husband, her mother Dorothy has not made his addition to the family any easy. Dorothy and Candiace had their own mother-daughter issues that came prior to Chris dating Candiace. However, their relationship didn’t make things any better. Once Candiace desired to settle down with Chris, she mustered up the courage to confront her mother and tell her to back off from judging her choices. The final step was moving out of the home Dorothy was paying the mortgage on. Now that they have a house in their own names, Candiace is working to maintain her independence as a wife and stepmother to Chris’ three kids.
Alas, while filming her new music video, Candiace’s mother seemingly came to talk crap about Chris. RHOP fans watched as Dorothy bogged Karen Huger down with criticisms on Chris and his manager role in Candiace’s career. After watching the episode back, Candiace opened up on why her mother still hasn’t taken a liking to her husband. “It’s obvious that my mom is not a fan of Chris being this involved in my career,” Candiace admitted on the RHOP: After Show. “I do think that part of it is that my mom was my momager in life before I ever met Chris, and my mom has always been my biggest cheerleader.”
Candiace says her mom took pride in managing and looking after her daughter. Now that Chris has taken her spot, Candiace thinks Dorothy “was starting to feel like she was losing her place as one of my biggest supporters.” Candiace and Dorothy have shared their counseling sessions on the show. Dorothy has worked to find common ground with her daughter after hitting her with her purse a few years back. With Dorothy still finding the time to bad-mouth Chris to Candiace’s friends, Candiace says that her mom is still a work in progress. “Anything that involves someone else that’s not her being a help to me, she’s going to side-eye. But we’re working on it,” Candiace said.
Now that newcomer Mia Thornton is on the scene, Dorothy appears to have an ally to gossip with. While Karen refused to entertain Dorothy’s bad-mouthing of Chris, Mia was totally enjoying it. She actually approached Dororthy and asked questions in hopes of getting the outspoken mother to spill the tea on her family woes with Candiace. After watching it back, Candiace wasn’t amused. In fact, she and Mia are now locked in a petty back-and-forth on social media. With a new enemy on The Real Housewives of Potomac, Candiace doesn’t need her mom feeding into any extra drama in her life. Candiace has more than enough to deal with.
