Downtime Manager is the app that will get players their Dungeons and Dragons fix during isolation. The unofficial mobile app allows players to continue on their fifth edition campaigns through side quests and the like.

The concept for this app is inspired by the Unearthed Arcana set that added Downtime rules. Released in 2017, Downtime rules in Dungeons & Dragons 5E make it so players can do extra things both in-game and in real life that will contribute to the game play. Each activity has a set reward, dictated by the Dungeon Master, that is redeemable upon completion. Rewards can include a multitude of things, either monetary or story-based; some most common rewards consist of money, items, clues, pieces of stories, and skills.

The app lets characters get their fill and continue on their way as well as giving the DM a way to keep the campaigns mostly on track—or at least make it easier to keep tabs on the company. The Downtime tasks vary in time, degree of difficulty, which means that players could spend two hours or two weeks completing a Downtime activity. So far, the activity list is limited to that released in Unearthed Arcana: research, ritual, and crafting. Tasks can also be complicated by the ever present threat of a roll of the dice. The app brings an extra element to the Downtime rules by factoring in mini games, puzzles, and in-game encounters.

Players can add their character stats and inventories to Downtime Managers to help keep track of any and all progress made in the app. It also has that vital element of the beloved table top game: cooperation. Downtime Manager is a great means for keeping in touch with the rest of the party when an in person session is in the not so near future.

Anyone who has ever played their way through a D&D campaign is well aware of how difficult the whole process is – from setting a time, to keeping on track with the story, and keeping the bard from seducing every being they come across. Thanks to Downtime Manager quests and adventures don’t have to fall by the wayside.
