Ryan Reynolds announces the Group Effort Initiative, a program that will bring Black, Indigenous, marginalized people of color onto the set of Reynolds’ newest movie, tentatively filming this fall. Reynolds’ statement comes on the heels of countless movies and TV shows, like Riverdale and The Bold Type, earning criticism for lack of diversity, as well as streaming services like Netflix announcing the addition of classic Black sitcoms.

The Group Effort Initiative is hoping to offset the power structure of the film industry, in which the majority of workers – particularly those in high-level roles – are white. On Friday, Reynolds tweeted, “The Group Effort Initiative is designed to invest in the talent and creativity of any and all under-represented communities who’ve felt this industry didn’t have room for their dreams,” along with a video of him further explaining the program and a link to its website. In the video and the website’s landing page, Reynolds states the initiative will be bringing on 10 to 20 trainees who are BIPOC – no matter their age. This wide range will hopefully give people of color, who have been systemically shut out of the industry, the chance to start a filmmaking career. As Reynolds points out, it’s never too late.

Each trainee will be paid and housed out of Reynolds’ own salary. Although the movie details are not yet confirmed and all plans are COVID-willing, those interested can register for email updates through the website. Reynolds notes that filming and application details will be available soon.

Reynolds also shared his hopes that other people of privilege from the industry will join as mentors, making the idea of ‘group effort’ a reality. While it won’t solve everything, the Group Effort Initiative is a small step in fixing the imbalance in the film industry – here’s hoping that other prominent directors, actors and producers join the effort too.
