Ryan Reynolds offers an update on development of Deadpool 3, revealing that the threequel is 70 percent likely to begin filming next year. The 44-year-old Canadian star brought the character to life on screen for the first time with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, though the film’s poor critical and commercial reception saw him put on ice for a while. After years of campaigning for another shot at the role and test footage of Reynolds in the red suit was leaked to overwhelmingly positive reception from fans, 20th Century Fox elected to greenlight a solo film.

Released in 2016, Deadpool proved to be a smash hit, grossing over $782 million at the box office and breaking the record for the highest-grossing R-rated film at the time while also scoring rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. Development swiftly began on a sequel to the film, which would hit theaters in 2018 to even higher box office returns and equally positive reception. Initially planned for Fox, Deadpool 3 has seen a longer development cycle due to the Disney-Fox merger as Reynolds began working with Marvel Studios to incorporate his version of the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Reynolds recently caught up with Collider to discuss his upcoming sci-fi comedy Free Guy. When the conversation shifted to the highly-anticipated Deadpool 3, the star joked he has “no sense of time” but did confirm he and Marvel Studios are “really actively developing it” and says there is a 70 percent chance it starts shooting next year while also praising the work of the Molyneux sisters with writing the script. “It’s something that is just a daily process. Writing is kind of like that, you’ve gotta allot time to do it and walk away, and I’m working with the Molyneuxs on it, it’s been great. They’re incredibly talented and so, so smart. They so understand that world and know how to zig when everyone’s expecting a zag, so it’s been a lot of fun.”

With the second film having introduced the likes of Zazie Beetz’ Domino and Josh Brolin’s Cable and the concept of the X-Force, audiences have been anxiously awaiting the return of Reynolds’ Deadpool. Given the already-full schedule of Phase 4 of the MCU and the character’s original ties to Fox’s now-dead X-Men franchise, the elongated development cycle for Deadpool 3 does make more sense in comparison to its predecessor. Marvel’s universe has yet to properly introduce the concept of mutants to audiences, let alone one who frequently breaks the fourth wall and cracks jokes about the actors portraying the very heroes on screen.

That being said, Reynolds’ confidence in the progress of Deadpool 3’s script and filming getting underway next year should be very promising for those eager fans. This year did bring the interesting — and timeline-breaking — pseudo-MCU introduction for Deadpool with his and Korg’s reaction video to the Free Guy trailer, sending audience anticipation through the roof for Reynolds to reprise the role while also creating a point of curiosity as to how this could be explained in-universe. With any luck, Taika Waititi’s Korg won’t be the only MCU character audiences see the Merc with a Mouth interact with on screen in the near future.
