With Spiral set to take the Saw franchise in new directions, here are ten storylines we could see happening in the movie.

For the first time since the Saw series debuted, we’re in for a fresh perspective in the grisly series. Spiral: From the Book of Saw, as the film is titled, will be looking to push Saw into the mainstream market with A-listers like Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock. It’s been confirmed that the film isn’t a reboot, and will have connections to the original series, although these will be very toned down.

However, in our speculation over what storylines we might see, we’ve considered the entire series at large for the possibilities of scenarios to be shown in Spiral. That said, here are 10 storylines – individually or overlapping with one another – that the film can have.

10 The Hunt For Jigsaw

This is the most obvious angle to speculate, but you’ll notice how we mentioned there would specifically be Jigsaw who will be hunted by the police. Jigsaw’s name has shied away from official materials so far, but we think it’s entirely possible the film continues with the same character as the villain.

The story could have a straight-up police procedural style, in that it could be based on the relentless search by the police to apprehend Jigsaw, with only the climax featuring the villain.

9 A Process In Making One Jigsaw’s Apprentice

What would make for an awesome twist would be if the film gradually makes it apparent that the whole chase is meant to be an initiation into making someone a Jigsaw apprentice. Saw IV flirted with the idea during Daniel Rigg’s trials, and here could be when we see it executed.

As it would go, we could see the latest protagonist Zeke uncovering new victims and find out that they might not have been people with solid backgrounds, and Jigsaw’s brand of justice could slowly turn Zeke into becoming a believer in this way.

8 Piecing Together Clues To Find The Latest Target

The spiral images in the trailer made it clear that the symbol has a major bearing in the movie. It comes from the red cheeks that Billy the puppet had, but things can always change. Here, the image could be associated with the victim the police have to find.

This could see the film take the Se7en route and place different clues under various traps that have a connection with the spiral symbol. All this with the intention of pointing the police to where the victim is trapped.

7 The Ultimate Trap Being Put Together

Having seen Jigsaw plan way ahead of time on multiple occasions, Spiral might be when his grand plan is set to be in motion. Here, we could see his final will being carried out in the form of the greatest trap.

This could have the police be lured into said trap after their investigations during the film. In order to illustrate it to the world at large, the grand trap can be shown being broadcast on TV for everyone to witness.

6 Zeke’s Personal Demons

There hasn’t been any main character yet who isn’t a prime target for Jigsaw due to their personal demons, and Zeke can be set up similarly in order to give him the motivation to pursue the villain.

This can be done by showing Zeke having a deep regret in life, something like losing a loved one or letting an innocent die while in the field of duty. The many spiral symbols could be there to push Zeke into confronting his demons and remember the tragedies of his past, a secret the villain somehow knows.

5 Finding A Copy Cat Killer

Since Spiral is supposed to be a departure from the norm in the Saw series, the film could choose to do away with Jigsaw entirely and instead have a copycat killer be the villain this time around. Of course, this would be a late reveal after initially teasing something else.

By bringing forward a copycat, the twist in the story would be how the lead characters had been chasing a ghost the whole time and the real bad guy had simply been fooling them to believe that Jigsaw was back.

4 The Descent Into Madness For The Main Characters

If you’ve played the Saw video games before, then you would know how easily one can get their mind twisted after being exposed too much to the traps and the people stuck in them. In Spiral, we can see this play out on screen.

The story can be set in a longer stretch of time, during which the police slowly start losing their senses after their search leads to them going around in circles. The constant feeling of being stalked by the villain can lead to these men eventually turning on each other in madness.

3 Uncovering A Movement For Jigsaw’s Message

Saw 3D’s poster had depicted an enormous mural in Jigsaw’s honor, with the point being that he had managed to turn people in the future his way. With the significant time that has passed since then, the time for this message is due to be set in.

With that in mind, we could see a movement come about, along the likes of V for Vendetta. The police’s investigation could lead to them discovering that the spiral images are supposed to represent the people who have taken to following Jigsaw ideology.

2 Searching For Zeke’s Partner

If there’s one thing that has been missing in the Saw series it has been a connection between two people. Spiral can change things up by having the story be about Zeke trying to find and free his partner William.

The dynamic can be furthered through the use of flashbacks as we see how the two got their camaraderie together, with various hints in these sequences for Zeke to draw from in his quest to save his friend. As for William, his story can be the part where we get to see him be used in a trap.

1 A Secret Hidden By Marcus Banks

Characters in the Saw series aren’t known for making the best decisions, and this trend can continue here with the character of Marcus Banks. As seen in the trailer, Banks was on edge while being seemingly stalked by the villain.

The story could take a different turn here by establishing that Banks has a secret association with the killer. This could range from either being secretly guilty of breaking the law and attempting to cover it up, or being in cahoots with the villain and deliver the main characters to them.
